Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Recorded in 1973 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, ENLIGHTENMENT is one of McCoy Tyner's finest recordings (which, considering the quality of his catalogue, is quite a feat). Backed by drummer Alphonse Mouzon, bassist Juney Booth, and saxophonist Azar Lawrence, Tyner puts on a performance that incorporates elements of post-bop, modal, free jazz, and other styles (the influence of John Coltrane, Tyner's former bandleader, is evident too).
The concert is presented in its entirety, a full 70 minutes, including the "Enlightenment Suite," which is divided into three parts, "Presence," and the 24-minute "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit." A kinetic, telepathic vibe can be heard evolving between these players, but this is very much Tyner's show: his trademark chordings and dazzling runs are in full flower. Adventurous, stunning, and quite beautiful, ENLIGHTENMENT is a must-have for fans of Tyner and late-'60s/early-'70s jazz.

Mccoy Tyner Enlightenment Songs Enlightenment Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) yClassic Live Performance Even after approximately thirty-five years, this CD recorded in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Fest is one of McCoy Tyner's finest live performances. The classic bass solo by Juini (Joony) Booth paints a picture of the Swiss Alps that remains inspirtional, and it's worth the price of the CD just to revisit it. Alphonse Mouzon undergirds Tyner's intense playing, and the exhuberance of youth is enjoyable. Azar Lawrence recalls Coltrane, but not quite--he is excellent in this context, and we welcome him back in the 21st century. Submitted by gloware77 (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Vintage Tyner This is terrific music that reveals Mr. Tyner in one of his finest performances. There is an energy and level of creativity that defines this work. A great band supports McCoy in his post Coltrane period. What ever happened to Azar Lawrence? Submitted by r.schoell (champaign,il,usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The real McCoy This concert recording captures McCoy Tyner at the peak of his energetic 70s. His piano sound is amazing, thunder comes to mind, overwhelming. This is like late-period Coltrane in terms of energy level, but much more accessible. If you only know Tyner from his work with Coltrane and/or his more recent recording, this will be a great surprise for you. Submitted by Kari (Washington DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Enlightenment CD music
$9.65 Digitally remastered by George Horn (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
After the death of John Coltrane, his longtime pianist McCoy Tyner was in something of a musical quandary. Keeping up with his mentor through the incredible explorations of the early '60s, he seemed to have some difficulty navigating the even further out territories explored in the two or three years before Coltrane's death in 1967. His subsequent albums as a leader were solid, enjoyable efforts but seemed oddly retrograde, as though he needed time to settle back and re-digest the information handed down to him. With Sahara, Tyner found the precise perfect "middle ground" on which to stand, more structured than late Coltrane, but exploding with a ferocity and freedom of sound that ...

$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
In 1973, jazz was branching out; the Mahavishnu Orchestra recorded "Between Nothingness and Eternity," Chick Corea made "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy," and McCoy Tyner teamed up with producer Orrin Keepnews for "Song of the New World." There's plenty of great music here, plus a vintage '70s vibe, on Tyner's first foray into orchestral jazz.
