(4 Customer Reviews)
This is the single-CD reissue of all of the music from a former two-LP set. Pianist McCoy Tyner's 1974 quintet consisted of the talented youngster Azar Lawrence on tenor and soprano, bassist Joony Booth, drummer Wilby Fletcher and percussionist Guilherme Franco. As is accurately stated in the new liner notes by Neil Tesser, Atlantis was the final recording from Tyner's last band to be based on the music of his former boss, John Coltrane. While Lawrence (who was only 20 at the time) derived his style partly from aspects of Coltrane and the rhythm section is fiery, Tyner creates some very powerful and highly original solos, really tearing into some of the more extended pieces. Recorded live at San Francisco's legendary Keystone Korner, this set has four of Tyner's modal originals played by the full group, a rendition of "My One and Only Love" performed by the leader, Lawrence and Franco as a trio, and a solo piano version of "In a Sentimental Mood." Essential music that still sounds fresh and adventurous. ~ Scott Yanow

Mccoy Tyner Atlantis Songs Atlantis Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) As fresh as ever after 30 years! CD version of the double LP that was the "in-thing" among the cognosenti in the mid-seventies. An irresistable mix of melody and rhythm in the Village Vanguard in New York City then, still irresistable today. Submitted by Koos (Nyon, Switzerland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great jazz was also played in the 1970s It took me a long time to get the 70s LPs by McCoy Tyner replaced but I finally got this, and Sahara and Enlightement, and they are all excellent. When others went electric, Tyner stepped the volume of his acoustic by playing it even harder. How his pianos survived this treatment, I have no idea, but the music sounds fresh and strong after three decades. Please also check out his later solo piano recordings. A true demonstration of catching the essence live... This album captures the excitement of watching and hearing true artists collaborate unselfeshly.. in what showcases timeless jazz at its finest.
I saw this album performed live at the now defunct SMILINGDOG SALOON in Cleveland,Ohio in 1974.When the musicians took the stage, there was a feeling of pride and purpose before they played their first note. They couldnt wait to perform this music for the audiance. No one left the stage untill their next solo, they were playing this united. From Atlantis to LoveSamba to Azar and Tyner buttering us up on My One and Only Love.We all shared their gift to us. EVERYONE knew this was bomb.I listen to this album at least once or twice every2 or 3 months and still get excited listening to Jooney Booth drive home that underlying drive as all those melodies and rythems are seemlessy brought together. This album is in my life music vaults. Intensity of John Coltrane Quartet continued... To have attended this live performance would have been a dream come true.
The playing on this recording is absolutely fantastic all the way around and this is a must have album for the collection.
