Recorded in Engelwood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 3, 1959. Originally released on Pretige/Bluesville (1003). Includes original liner notes by Dale Wright.
Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
Willie Dixon's first album under his own name is a tasty, if rather curious affair. It was recorded at the dawn of the first great blues revival, before white college kids like the Rolling Stones started plugging their guitars into amps and emulating Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. In fact, WILLIE'S BLUES is what those two artists might have sounded like had they been recorded in a jazz setting.
The lack of harmonica is unsettling, although Al Ashby's tenor sax fills in manfully, and the sound is eerily clean--one waits in vain for that great Chess Records reverb. All in all, the album is rather more laid back than you might have expected. For want of a better term, it's almost lounge blues, with the notable exceptions of "Slim's Thing," a great boogie woogie workout that gives co-conspirator Memphis Slim a chance to strut his stuff on piano, and a chugging version of Howlin' Wolf's "Built for Comfort."
Personnel: Willie Dixon (vocals, bass); Memphis Slim (piano); Wally Richardson (guitar); Al Ashby (tenor saxophone); Gus Johnson (drums).
Q (12/92, p.146) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Frontally mixed, his sonorous, slapping double bass promenades through each of the very distinctive songs, his fully-burred, casually swinging voice ambles through the jazzy sparseness..." Willie Dixon Willie's Blues Songs Willie's Blues Review

1985's SOUL TO SOUL was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's third album and on it, they are joined by keyboardist Reese Wynans whose contributions gives it a funkier edge than its two predecessors. Vaughan was always respectful of his roots and this time out he chose to included covers of songs by Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister"), Earl King ("Come On [Part III]") and Willie Dixon ("You'll Be Mine"). Even on songs he'd written himself, the Texas guitar slinger can be heard channeling Albert King's high-bent, string-squeezing technique on "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love," while a Jimi Hendrix-like combo of squalling leads and wah-wah-soaked rhythm playing saturate the infectious title track.
Wynans fattened up the trio's sound and his use of Hammond organ is a perfect compliment to the Grant Green-like touch Vaughan gave to Eddie Harris' "Gone Home." "Change It" takes on an insistent edge as Wynan's organ swirls around SRV's crunching riffs. The bonus tracks include a 1989 interview with Timothy White along with the Slim Harpo-flavored "Slip Slidin' Slim" and a monster medley of Hendrix's "Little Wing/Third Stone From The Sun."
By adding two members to Double Trouble -- keyboardist Reese Wynans and saxophonist Joe Sublett -- Stevie Ray Vaughan indicated he wanted to add soul and R&B inflections to his basic blues sound, and Soul to Soul does exactly that. It's still a modern blues album, yet it has a wider sonic palette, finding Vaughan fusing a variety ...
