Recorded in April, 1960. When producer Chris Albertson brought Lonnie Johnson and guitarist Elmer Snowden into a studio for this album on April 9, 1960, both musicians hadn't recorded in a number of years. Indeed, Snowden hadn't seen the inside of a studio in 26 years, but you'd never know it by the fleet-fingered work he employs on the opening "Lester Leaps In," where he rips off one hot chorus after another. Johnson plays a dark-toned electric while Snowden plays acoustic, with Wendell Marshall rounding things out on bass. Given Johnson's reputation as a closet jazzer, it's remarkable that he merely comps rhythm behind Snowden's leads on "C-Jam Blues" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street." Johnson handles all the vocals, turning in an especially strong turn on the second take of "Stormy Weather." Lots of studio chatter make this disc of previously unissued material a real joy to listen to, a loose and relaxed session with loads of great playing and singing to recommend it. ~ Cub KodaSing Out! (11-12/94-1/95, pp.131-132) - "...In the duets with Snowden, Johnson tends to take the back seat, but anyone who loves great jazz guitar will be as happy with Snowden's acoustic artistry as with Johnson's own work..." | | Liars Drum's Not Dead CD (2006) With DVD
Blues, Ballads And Jumpin' Jazz
$12.29 This set was partly inspired by the band's reloca tion to Berlin from NYC after their 2004 album, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. The album comes with its own cinematic sister DVD with 3 film versions of the album, directed by band member Angus Andrew, Julian Gross, and filmmaker Markus Wambsganss. Each film is comprised of videos for every track on the album: 36 videos total. From backstage travelogues to surreal animation and mini sci-fi epics, Liars documents the process of recording, touring, then visually reinventing each track.
Liars: Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill, Julian Gross. A concept album based on fictional characters named Mt. Heart Attack and Drum, this mesmerizing record is the result of the art-rock ensemble Liars, formerly of Brooklyn, taking up residence in Berlin after the release of the critically divisive THEY WERE WRONG, SO WE DROWNED. Although DRUM'S NOT DEAD does rely heavily on pummeling percussion and chanted vocals, the undoubtedly challenging outing is quite nuanced and dynamic, with many of the Mt. Heart Attack tracks (particularly "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack") conveying a compulsive energy, and the Drum-related compositions (see the droning "Hold You, Drum") conjuring up a meditative dreaminess. The CD is accompanied by a DVD that presents three short films (two of which are directed by band members), each one following the arc of this fascinatingly strange excursion. Continuing to explore the noise rock/prog rock fusion they pioneered with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, Liars return with another concept album, Drum's Not Dead. The idea behind this album is even more abstract than They Were Wrong's conflation of witch trials and pagan rituals: Drum's Not Dead revolves around the yin-yang relationship of two forces in the creative process, personified as Mt. Heart Attack (who represents stress and self-doubt) ...

Blues, Ballads And Jumpin' Jazz
$10.29 REVIEWS-www.performermag.comFlashbulb Memories - As My Road CurvesProduced, recorded and mixed by Cory PlaughReviewer -Shawn M. HaneyDecember 13, 2004As My Road Curves is a mesmerizing effort for this young group of intuitive, creative musicians. The album opens with a dazzling instrumental, only to be superseded by "What You See is What You Get," a fierce barrage of guitars and percussion, accompanied by a fresh new voice from the frontman. The songs are full of texture and color, dynamics and introspective lyrics. The melodies are strong as well. The technique on lead guitars and percussion is sharp. Perhaps the one thing this group lacks is enough members to truly expand on their many ideas. It's hard to believe that the ...
