EXPLORATIONS, Bill Evans' fourth solo album, is aptly named. Throughout, Evans displays the high-minded lyrical facility, long flowing phrases and rich sound that made him so popular with both fans and other musicians during the 1950s and '60s. The intrepid nature of his improvisations and the edgy interactivity of his trio echo the album's title in tracks like the expansive "Elsa," "Israel," and the Miles Davis composition "Nardis."
Evans is also a master of the ballad, and he shapes tracks such as "Haunted Heart" and the shimmering, evocative "Elsa" into exercises of grace and sensitivity. There is a fair share of swing here too, with the up-tempo "Sweet and Lovely" and "Beautiful Love." Evan's imaginative, meticulous stylings flow through every piece, and it is difficult to resist the balance of intelligence, tenderness, groove and mood that EXPLORATIONS achieves.

Recorded on the same night as Sunday At The Village Vanguard, Waltz For Debby captures one of the most important and well-integrated piano trios in the history of jazz, working on a superbly inspired night. It is clear, listening to this record, that bassist Scott Lafaro had a very special rapport with Evans, and drummer Paul Motian's subtle, improvised accompaniments and eccentric, quirkily quiet swing was the perfect engine for this subtle, impressionistic ...

INTERPLAY is not your typical Bill Evans record. Usually, the pianist preferred to record in a trio setting, exploring the quiet intimacy that it allowed. This is a rare quintet session featuring a line up of all-stars from the hard-bop era that emphasized faster tempos and a more robust approach. With Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Jim Hall (guitar), Percy Heath (bass) and the fiery Philly Joe Jones (drums), Evans shows a brighter, more spirited execution in his playing than usual.
On the jumping opener "You And The Night And The Music" Evans is in exceptional form as he nimbly executes very bop-ish right hand lines that weave and ...

Bassist Scott LaFaro's death in the early summer of 1961, just 10 days after the Bill Evans Trio's triumphant Village Vanguard engagement was a devastating personal and musical, loss to the pianist, after which he took nearly a year off from recording or playing in public. (The Vanguard performances can be heard on SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE, WALTZ FOR DEBBY and AT THE VANGUARD.) It fell to another bassist, Chuck Israel, to bring Evans out and re-establish the Bill Evans Trio as a going concern. Possessed of a warm tone, Israels' essentially supportive playing with the Trio made for a studied contrast with the brashly virtuosic LaFaro, which was not necessarily a bad thing.
As if to make up for lost time, the newly reconstituted trio recorded two albums' worth of material in June and May of 1962. MOONBEAMS is the "softer" of the two and introduced two graceful Evan's originals, "Re: Person I Knew" (an anagram of producer Orrin Keepnews's name) and the lyrical fugue ...

$9.45 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of JUJU includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (1998, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
JUJU, Wayne Shorter's second Blue Note date as a leader, displays a more personal side to the legendary saxophonist. As the lone horn man, Shorter performs with an artistic sensitivity that was often hidden in the larger front lines of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and his later work with Miles Davis. His arresting tone is unfettered in this small ensemble setting. As a result, Shorter's singular approach is more clearly illustrated and his unique compositional style takes on a more exclusive tint.
Unlike his bold compositions for the Blakey bands, the tunes here have an inward mystery to them. The lilting title track, a waltz on the surface, contains a dark, tension-filled undertone that is deftly propelled by Elvin Jones' ...
