| | Charles Mingus Town Hall Concert CD Charles Mingus Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by Danny Kopelson (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Consisting of two lengthy pieces, this 1964 concert captures one of Mingus' finest ensembles doing what they do best. The first piece, "So Long Eric" (named for saxophonist, bass clarinettist and flautist Eric Dolphy who died two months after this recording), is a free-form blues that slows, shifts to double-time, somersaults over itself through themes and changes, before arriving at a section of dreamlike intensity in which Dolphy seems to be channelling otherworldly spirits through his alto.
The second track, "Meditations" (here called "Praying With Eric"), is a kaleidoscopic Mingus masterwork. Here Mingus shows his inclination toward the classical mode of composition: the pulsing, tribal intro is reminiscent of Stravinsky, Dolphy's flute soars above Mingus's eerie, gorgeous bowed bass, with Jaki Byard's concert piano weaving webs around them both. The piece unfolds in a manic hybrid: blues, swing, violent discord and improvisation which is both playful and astonishingly skillful. The energy of the composition develops almost like a piece of theater: stops, tempo shifts and antiphonal passages create dramatic tension, build to a fever pitch, then dissolve into thin, disparate interwoven instrumental strains. For the ambition and accomplishment of this track alone, TOWN HALL CONCERT merits a recommendation.
Recorded at Town Hall, New York, New York on April 4, 1964. Originally released on Jazz Workshop (005-S). Includes original liner notes by Charles Mingus.
Personnel: Charles Mingus (acoustic bass); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute); Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone); Johnny Coles (trumpet); Jaki Byard (piano); Dannie Richmond (drums).

Town Hall Concert album
$6.49 This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version.
Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand ...

| | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Town Hall Concert music CDs
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his ...

Town Hall Concert music CDs
$10.15 Having finished his tenure with George Shearing in 1954, a thoroughly Latin-inoculated Cal Tjader took off on his own, recording several short slices of infectious Latin jazz, from which a dozen were selected for this album. Many of the selections are standards retrofitted with percolating Latin rhythms, ...
| | Pendragon History: 1984-2000 CD (2001)
Town Hall Concert songs
$10.75 An eminently listenable dozen tunes from Pendragon with a six-page booklet enclosed in a gorgeous foldout CD box, The History: 1984-2000 is a wonderful introduction to this storied ensemble for the uninitiated. This is not to be confused with the 1999 release Overture, 1984-1996, though some of the tracks do overlap -- original versions of "The Voyager" and "Total Recall" are on both CDs while The History: 1984-2000 contains acoustic versions of "Paintbox" and "The King of the Castle" specially recorded for this compilation. Where Overture, 1984-1996 contained a live version of "The Black Knight" with the original found here, only completists need seek out both versions. But what The History: 1984-2000 reveals is that this "prog rock" band is actually more progressive folk. Yes, the aura and sometimes ostentatious style that characterize bands like Genesis and ELP are certainly noticeable, but more so are the stylish guitars and almost adult contemporary approach. The music is more ...
