Five of the six selections on this CD reissue feature drummer Art Taylor in an all-star sextet of mostly young players comprised of trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Jackie McLean, Charlie Rouse on tenor, pianist Ray Bryant, and bassist Wendell Marshall. Among the highpoints of the 1957 hard bop date are the original version of Bryant's popular "Cubano Chant" and strong renditions of two Thelonious Monk tunes ("Off Minor" and "Well, You Needn't") cut just prior to the pianist/composer's discovery by the jazz public. Bryant is the most mature of the soloists, but the three horn players were already starting to develop their own highly individual sounds. The remaining track (a version of Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A.") is played by the quartet of Taylor, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, and bassist Paul Chambers and is a leftover (although a good one) from another session. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on February 25 and March 22, 1957. Originally released on Prestige (7117). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.

Johnny Griffin was rightfully known for his speed and dexterity on the tenor sax, and his work on this 1958 sextet session is no exception. Griffin's full-bodied, bluesy tone and vigorous, lightning-fingered lines scintillate on each of the five tracks here. What makes this Riverside date particularly notable, however, is the instrumentation and quality of the personnel. The rhythm section of piano (Kenny Drew), bass (Wilbur Ware), and drums (Philly Joe Jones) is fronted by Griffin, Donald Byrd on trumpet, ...

Taylor's Wailers songs
$13.85 This is a consistently fascinating set by altoist Oliver Lake's String Project. Best known for his exploratory flights, Lake is an underrated arranger/composer. For the unusual but consistently fascinating effort, he utilizes a string quartet (violinist Ashley Horne and Sandra Billingslea, Ashley Horne on viola, and cellist Eileen Folson) for five of his six originals, occasionally adding bassist Belden Bullock and (on one song apiece) trumpeter Kenyatta Beasley (during the well-titled "Fan Fare Bop") and Neil Clarke on conga. The music is adventurous but quite coherent, often rhythmic and melodic but very open to advanced ideas. These string players can definitely stretch out; improvised sections coincide closely with written passages, so it is sometimes difficult ...

Taylor's Wailers album
$14.45 With this recording, Joshua Redman attempts a long-form composition for the first time, a series of eight numbers that form a cycle of sorts. The promotional buzz claimed that Redman was taking stock of his music ten years after winning the Thelonious Monk competition, the event that had the effect of launching him full-blown into the big time. Whether ...
