This title is one of two excellent recordings trumpeter Art Farmer made with Gigi Gryce in the mid-'50s. Gryce not only contributes some fine alto solos but also provides the majority of the material and arrangements. Standouts like his cool, mid-tempo swinger "Satellite" and the Latin-tinged "Sans Souci" provide excellent solo vehicles for both Farmer and pianist Duke Jordan. In fact, the predominantly cool material seems to fit everybody quite well, as evidenced by the stellar ensemble playing on all the tracks (special mention goes to drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Addison Farmer [Art's brother] for their particularly empathetic and consistent rhythmic support). Up-tempo cuts like Jordan's "Forecast" and Gryce's "Nica's Tempo" round out a set that qualifies as one of Farmer's best. A must for every jazz collection. ~ Stephen Cook
During 1955, trumpeter Art Farmer had a short-lived quintet with altoist Gigi Gryce, but because neither of the co-leaders were big names at the time, the band did not last long. Fortunately, they did record two albums of material, of which this CD reissue (originally known as Evening in Casablanca) was the second. In addition to Farmer and Gryce, the unit includes pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. With the exception of Duke Jordan's "Forecast," the cool-toned hard bop date consists entirely of Gryce compositions, of which "Evening in Casablanca" and "Nice's Tempo" are best known. Excellent music well deserving a close listen. ~ Scott Yanow

$18.39 Twenty-six songs by the late big-band singer of the 1930's and 1940's, opening with the intoxicating "You Go To My Head," from 1938. A lot of the material here is from Simms' film appearances, from the actual soundtracks, so there are occasionally sound effects and extended instrumental ...

$14.79 Italian pop star Zucchero has never hidden his love of American music. In fact, on much of this album--a collection of his artistic collaborations dating from 1988 to 2004--his appreciation for blues and jazz, in particular, is on full display.
The most striking song on ZUCCHERO & CO. is "Dune Mosse," which pairs the singer with legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis for a dreamy track that tips its hat to Davis's revered KIND OF BLUE era. Zucchero's blues leanings are revealed on a number of tunes, most notably on "A Wonderful World" (with Eric Clapton) and "Diavolo in Me (A Devil in Me)" (with Solomon Burke), the disc's most energetic song. Regardless of the collaborator, Zucchero's full-bodied vocals stand out, particularly on emotive pop songs, including his cover of "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" (with Vanessa Carlton). For fans of American pop that are unfamiliar with Zucchero, this dynamic set is an ideal introduction.

Featuring Gigi Gryce album
$11.65 Three years is a long time to wait between albums for a singer/songwriter, especially when you're coming off the back of a very successful debut in 2004 and wait until 2007 for the follow-up, but that's exactly what Lucie Silvas did with her second album, The Same Side. People quickly forget, or others come along to fill the void, and that is what appeared to have happened to her. Her debut album, Breathe In, just missed the Top Ten, but where were those buyers when The Same Side came along? If anything, The Same Side ...
