Plenty of fireworks go off during this 1959 session that Coleman Hawkins recorded for Prestige. Here Hawkins reaches to ever higher improvisatory vistas, urged on by guest Charlie Shavers' exciting and brassy trumpet playing. On the opening track, "Hawk Eyes," guitarist Tiny Grimes uses a distorted sound to add energy and verve to the proceedings. Hawkins' own style is rich and full-bodied, and his solos are extroverted and often marked by raw, vibrato-laden playing.
On HAWK EYES, the soloists all share a distinct sense of urgency. The music is bluesy but also lush and sophisticated. Highlights include the midtempo swinger "I Never Knew" and the down-home groove of "C'mon In." But perhaps the best tune on this release is the smoky ballad "La Rosita," which features fine accompaniment by the under-appreciated pianist Ray Bryant.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on April 3, 1959. Originally released on Prestige (7156). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.
Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Charlie Shavers (trumpet); Ray Bryant (piano); Tiny Grimes (guitar); George Duvivier (bass); Osie Johnson (drums).

Hawk Eyes album
$24.45 In an era where it's not uncommon for a superstar act to wait three or four years between releases, it's astonishing to realize that Carole King wrote and recorded a strong follow-up to 1971's bazillion-selling TAPESTRY that was released before the year was up! MUSIC was a big commercial success, but anything would pale next to the ecstatic commercial response to TAPESTRY, which was still high in the charts when this follow-up was released. The generically-titled MUSIC didn't spawn any hits as big as "It's Too Late" or "So Far Away," but with several decades' hindsight, it's clear that TAPESTRY was no fluke; in its more low-key way, MUSIC is every bit as fine an album. Highlights include two jazz-tinged tracks, "Brother Brother" and the waltz-time title track, which features a remarkable saxophone solo by Curtis Amy. "Growing Away From Me" and the mournful "It's Going To Take ...

| | Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits 4 Defenders Of Justice Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits Volume 4: Defenders Of Justice CD (1998)
Hawk Eyes album
$14.65 The four-volume SCI-FI'S GREATEST HITS series features themes from classic science fiction films and television shows.
Following in footsteps of TVT's TeeVee Tunes compilations, Sci-Fi has compiled four albums of themes and suites from a broad assortment of TV shows and movies, going to the original sources for the tracks. This makes the quality fairly variable, though some good work has been done with noise reduction on the more questionable entries. Also variable is the actual length of individual tracks -- many feature just the main title, but several (such as the "RoboCop" and "The Road Warrior" entries) go on into lengthy chunks of the underscore as well. Overall, this is a cute collection, with some great moments: It's nice to have a good copy of the animated "X-Men" theme, and a hoot to ...
| | Cannonball Adderley Greatest Hits CD (2000)
Hawk Eyes CD music
$6.45 An inexpensive through frustratingly brief overview of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's '60s tenure at Capitol Records, GREATEST HITS is a fine introduction to the alto saxophonist's soul-jazz era. "Mercy Mercy Mercy," a powerfully bluesy groove powered by some of Adderley's most impassioned playing, was an unexpected ...

| | Asphalt Prairie CD (2003)
Hawk Eyes album
$11.39 The Asphalt Prairie is the place where musicians pay their dues struggling for years on the road. It is also a great new band with a mix of aspiring young musicians and narly older dudes. What they all have in common is that they can really play. AP is primarily a collaboration between Gary Warden and Steve Williams. Gary grew up in the Pacific Northwest spending some time, and a few brain cells, playing in the old Height Ashbury area. Gary can play anything that is not tied down, and he does, from mandolin to Dobro and everything in between. His songs are Heartland Music with stories from across the land. Gary played for years as the frontman for The Dead Drakes, a popular Portland, Or. band. Steve comes from the area of NJ the Soprano's stay out of, Jersey City. His songs are heavily influenced by his background and the fabulous bands that played in that area. Steve played with some of the original members of Blondie as well as several popular bands in the NY/NJ area. Steve is Mr.P Bass and acoustic guitar for Asphalt Prairie.AP has 2 of the best lead guitarists around with 19 year old D-Man aka Darren Williams screaming arpeggio riffs.Darren's "uncle Joe" is the former lead guitarist of "Cup Of Joe" and Thulcandra.Joe played the Stone Pony around the same time as Bruce Springstein. One of the finest diversified guiratists anywhere.Rounding out AP are "The Jazz Guys".Fast Jimmy Pearce on Hammond organ and acoustic piano ...

| | Ruiner Prepare To Be Let Down CD (2007)
Hawk Eyes music CDs
$10.95 Are they metal or are they hardcore? That's a question that many fans of both genres of rock music find themselves asking more and more often during the early 21st century. Case in point, the 2007 debut full-length by Ruiner, Prepare to Be Let Down. It should come as no surprise that the Ruiner gentlemen list such acts as Minor Threat and Converge as their prime influences, but somewhere along the line, they must have come in close contact ...
