"Flugelin' The Blues" did not appear on the original LP release of IN ORBIT. It was recorded at the same sessions for inclusion on the Riverside label anthology NEW BLUE HORNS.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
One of Thelonious Monk's rare appearances as a sideman is on this quartet set led by flügelhornist Clark Terry. With bassist Sam Jones and drummer Philly Joe Jones, Terry and pianist Monk perform a set that surprisingly has only one Monk song ("Let's Cool One"). Among the high points of this spirited, boppish date are Terry's "One Foot in the Gutter" and "Argentia." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Sonny Clark Sonny's Crib CD (1959) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition
In Orbit music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
Recorded in 1957, Sonny's Crib features a front line of Curtis Fuller, Donald Byrd, and John Coltrane with Sonny Clark on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and Paul Chambers on bass. Truly still a bebop recording, done a full year before the landmark Cool Struttin' session, nonetheless the set produced some awesome readings of classic tunes, like the opener, "With a Song in My Heart," with one of the knottiest Byrd solos ever. As Chambers and Taylor up the rhythmic ante and Clark comps with enormous chords in the background, the entire line solos, but it is Byrd's that is stunning in its complexity -- though Coltrane could play bebop as well as anybody. The most notable tracks on the session are the classic readings of Kurt Weill's ...

Trying to describe Andrew Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE in words is like trying to explain the pictures made by a kaleidoscope--it's impossible to be completely articulate about something so magically unique. Of course, with an assembled cast that includes Kenny Dorham, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, ...

$13.25 The teachings of Tantra suggest that everything on earth is infused with spirit, and God is in the details. Anugama certainly plays music like it's a sacred act. In addition to creating blissful sounds with flute and keyboards, he also employs a variety of audio techniques to evoke heaven on earth.

| | Classic Blues Artwork From The 1920'S, Vol. 3 Calendar 2006 CD (2005)
In Orbit album
$8.65 Each year Blues Images releases a calendar that matches vintage artwork from 1920s and '30s 78-rpm record sleeves with a month of the year, and then includes an accompanying CD of the songs themselves (plus a few bonus tracks to fill things out). It's hard to say which is more revealing, the artwork or the songs, since both afford a glimpse back at a world that has long since faded into the realm of collectors, archivists and historians. The CDs themselves, by virtue of the month-by-month matching process (which means that Leroy Carr's classic "Christmas in Jail" is awarded the month of December here on the disc for 2005's calendar), are necessarily varied, and the end result is that these brief compilations make very cool temporal mix sequences. This installment begins and ends with a pair of haunting Skip James sides recorded in 1931, "Devil Got My Woman" and "Cypress Grove Blues," and also includes rare gems like Willie Brown's fine "M&O Blues" from 1930 and Mattie Delaney's striking variation on the "High Water Rising" theme called "Tallahatchie River Blues," also from 1930. Although hardly exhaustive as a stand-alone compilation, taken in conjunction with the calendar artwork, Blues Image Presents...16 Classic Blues Songs from the 1920s, Vol. 3 offers a rare chance to revisit the past while arranging one's affairs for the future, which is a really neat trick. ~ Steve ...
