Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1988, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Combining altoist Benny Carter with pianist Earl Hines in a quartet is an idea with plenty of potential, but the results of this 1958 session are relaxed rather than explosive. Carter and Hines explore a dozen tunes (standards as well as forgotten songs like "All Alone" and "Mary Lou") with respect and light swing, but one wishes that there were a bit more competitiveness to replace some of the mutual respect. [Originally released in 1958, Swingin' the Twenties was digitally remastered on CD in 1988 and includes bonus tracks.]~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Contemporary Records Studio, Los Angeles, California on November 2, 1958. Originally released on Contemporary (7561). Includes original release liner notes by Lester Koenig.
Personnel: Benny Carter (alto saxophone, trumpet); Earl Hines (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Shelly Manne (drums).

$11.39 "A BELTER OF THE BLUES", is how "PHILA. INQUIRER MAGAZINE" featured SISTER BLUE in a 1998 feature of "LOCAL ANGLE". That same year "NORTHEAST TIMES" described her as a singer whose..."soul fights its way out and fills the room with well-seasoned wisdom and joy", and "strums her guitar with a trance-like fervor". In 1999, "CHESTNUT HILL LOCAL" exclaimed, "she bellows, belabors, and blasts the blues as if it's ...
| | Anke Helfrich Better Times Ahead CD (2006)
Swingin' The 20'S
$13.25 The fact that Anke Helfrich follows an ultra-fast, hell-bent-for-changes performance of Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You" with a mildly avant-garde, somewhat AACM-ish number like the brief "Miniatur: An-Ma-De" speaks well of the German acoustic pianist. It tells you that she was intent on bringing some variety to Better Times Ahead, which will not be accused of being one-dimensional. Actually, most of this 2005 date (which employs Martin Gjakonovski on upright bass, Dejan Terzic on drums, and special guest Roy Hargrove on trumpet and flugelhorn) is not avant-garde. There are some outside moments on "Miniatur: An-Ma-De" and the angular "Der Turm," ...
| | Tony Bennett Young Tony CDs (2007) (Import) England; Box Set; Germany
Swingin' The 20'S
$21.99 Exhaustive 2007 four CD box set on Proper that focuses on Tony Bennett's early '50s recordings as a Pop vocalist and traces his early career as he made a gradual move into the Jazz market, working with the great Count Basie amongst others. 82 tracks including 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', 'I Wanna Be Loved', 'Cold Cold Heart', 'Kiss You' and many others. Proper.
Twenty-three-year-old Tony Bennett recorded and released his first single for Columbia Records, "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (with its B-side, "I Wanna Be Loved"), in April 1950. From then until the end of 1956, he recorded 87 tracks released contemporaneously on 35 Columbia singles and two LPs, Cloud 7 (February 7, 1955) and Tony (January 14, 1957), not counting compilations. On January 1, 2007, Bennett's 1956 recordings joined those from previous years in entering the public domain in Europe, where copyright extends only 50 years. The British label Proper Records took advantage of that to release Young Tony, a four-CD box set largely devoted to Bennett's 1950-1956 recordings, containing 82 selections with a running time of about three hours and 54 minutes, a length that might have been contained (though just barely) on three discs. The collection, arranged chronologically by recording date, includes all of Bennett's Columbia recordings from April 17, 1950, to September 24, 1954, except "Let's Make Love," from that first recording session. But having featured nearly all of Bennett's first 26 singles, the set then excludes most of his 45s from 1955 and 1956, employing only the A-side of the last of them, "Just in Time," the song from the Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing that reached number 46 in the Billboard singles chart. That means other chart entries "Can You Find It in Your Heart," "From the Candy Store on the Corner ...
