Even in 1968 when the jazz avant-garde was becoming quite influential, tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet played in his own timeless style, performing in an idiom little changed during the previous 20 years. With the assistance of pianist Barry Harris, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Alan Dawson, Jacquet is heard throughout this CD reissue (which adds a previously unissued "Don't Blame Me" to the original program) swinging hard and generally expressing himself in a typically extroverted fashion. "Bottoms Up" (a relative of "Flying Home"), "Jivin' with Jack the Bellboy," and Jacquet's excellent original ballad "You Left Me All Alone" are most memorable. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Illinois Jacquet (tenor saxophone); Barry Harris (piano); Ben Tucker (bass instrument); Alan Dawson (drums).

Bottoms Up album
$10.15 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
The great tenor Illinois Jacquet is joined by a ten-piece group that includes trumpeter Joe Newman and Milt Buckner on piano and organ for this 1969 Prestige studio session which has been reissued on CD by the OJC series. Jacquet is in prime form, particularly on "The Soul Explosion" (which benefits from a Jimmy Mundy arrangement), a definitive "After Hours" and a previously unissued version of "Still King." This blues-based set is full of soul but often swings quite hard with the focus on Jacquet's exciting tenor throughout. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Jimmy Giuffre Easy Way CD (1959) Remastered; Digipak
Bottoms Up CD music
$9.89 Jimmy Giuffre's small-group recordings of the late '50s and early '60s are renowned for his lyrical tone and intimate chamber jazz settings. Joined by frequently collaborator Jim Hall on guitar and bassist Ray Brown (who easily settles into the mellower atmosphere far removed from his many recordings with Oscar Peterson), Giuffre primarily sticks to clarinet in his interpretations of the standards "Mack the Knife" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Switching to tenor sax, Giuffre negotiates Jim Hall's tricky "Careful," though it is Hall's bluesy solo that is the ...

Bottoms Up music CDs
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy ...

| | Thelonious Monk Criss-Cross CD (1963) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Bottoms Up album
$6.75 Recorded in New York, New York between November 6, 1962 and March 29, 1963.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
CRISS-CROSS is the result of five sessions with the ever-present Charlie Rouse on tenor plus the rhythm compliment of drummer Frankie Dunlop and bassist John Ore. It was recorded at a time when Monk had actually become a popular beat icon; his iconoclast mug appeared on the cover of Time barely a year later.
While the majority of the material here is Monk's, his whimsical way with the two standards, "Tea For Two" and "Don't Blame Me," makes them special treats. The former is like an old suitcase bursting at the seams with zany new toys, the melody rife with Monk's truncated chromatic tails, his solo chunky with erratic-sounding bass comping, all of it amusingly bookended by the tongue-in-cheek straightness of Ore's intro and Monk's final toy-piano notes. By contrast, Rouse stays true to the compartmentalized quality of the head on "Criss-Cross," blowing short, dense strands that sound like the flight path of a beatnik butterfly as ...

| | Tribute To Tool CD (2002)
Bottoms Up songs
$13.65 In the jazz world, tribute albums are inescapable. Every week, jazz artists are recording tributes to Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Cole Porter, or someone else they admire. But in rock, they aren't as plentiful -- for every Bob Dylan, Doors, or Rolling Stones tribute that gets recorded, there are a lot more Ellington or George Gershwin tributes coming from the jazz world. One of rock's more tribute-minded labels is Cleopatra, which has paid homage to countless rockers. As a rule, Cleopatra's tribute albums are interesting -- and this 2002 release (which finds 12 different artists providing ...

Bottoms Up songs
$14.49 Organist Mike LeDonne has built upon the tradition of soul-jazz organ/tenor sax combos of the 1960s and 1970s on this delightful CD that was recorded at Smoke in New York City. Joined by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and guitarist Peter Bernstein (both of whom worked extensively in similar groups), along with drummer Joe Farnsworth, LeDonne gets things going with an extended workout of the Spinners' "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" that allows for plenty of fine blowing. The late organist Charles Earland provides plenty of fireworks, while Duke Pearson's bittersweet "Idle ...
| | Last Stand CD (1999)
Bottoms Up album
$38.39 Cold Chisel's "Last Stand" CD and DVD, packaged together for the first time. The historic Cold Chisel 'Last Stand' concert was recorded and filmed at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in December 1983. The CD is remastered with new tracks added. The DVD includes great interview footage with all band members and Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett.
Years of struggle had turned Cold Chisel into one of Australian rock's all-time great bands -- many would argue the greatest. But the years had also taken their toll and, by the early '80s, rifts had begun to drag on the band. Drummer Steve Prestwich called it quits in June 1983. Two months later, the band put out a press release saying it was disbanding and in December played its final concerts to sold-out audiences at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The shows were filmed for the documentary Last Stand: this is the film's soundtrack ...
