Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
His first recording as a leader finds Cedar Walton an optimistic and self-assured pianist/composer in the post-bop style. This 1967, cleanly-produced recording contains seven swinging numbers featuring Cedar in trio, quartet and quintet configurations. The album opens with "Turquoise Twice," a hard-driving, modally-inclined tune. Cedar's solo is crisp, logical and rigorous, his left hand dipping into some McCoy Tyner-like fifths. His no-nonsense approach, and rootsy pianistic touch carries the album.
This is intelligent but not intellectual jazz. One of the strongest tracks is the charming but edgy "Twilight Waltz." Billy Higgins' drums out some swinging counter-rhythms underneath Cedar's bluesy ornamentation. And trumpeter Kenny Dorham performs a clearly melodic solo, straight and singing. "My Ship" (Gershwin-Weill) is intimate as a trio. Cedar's balance between horn-like single notes and meaty, two-hand chord voicings is masterful. And the ethereal ending adds an appropriately literary touch. Junior Cook's lazy, airy tenor sax solo lends a Sunday morning vibe to Ellington's "Come Sunday." This slightly odd arrangement is in 6/8, but the band breaks into a solid, driving 4/4 for the solos. An impressive debut, CEDAR! can be enjoyed by the erudite jazz buff and the casual listener alike.

| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Cedar! CD music
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are the set's other rarities. Start your Allman Brothers ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Cedar! music CDs
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music wouldn't have taken on the rock trappings that it did in the '80s and '90s. As it was, the band was considered too country for the Top 40 rock format of the time, and too rock & roll for country radio. This set is the place to start for an appreciation of the original Poco, when the group was considered to be Richie Furay's band. All the ingredients are here that made their music so delightful: the trademark high-vocal harmonies; Rusty Young's pedal ...
| | Elvis Costello Cruel Smile CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Cedar! songs
$16.65 CRUEL SMILE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.
CRUEL SMILE is a limited-edition companion piece to Elvis Costello's other 2002 release WHEN I WAS CRUEL, which was a return to rock-oriented tunes after dalliances with Anne Sofie Von Otter and Burt Bacharach. The main ties to WHEN I WAS CRUEL are a handful of live recordings of songs from that album and some remixed versions. Beyond those, CRUEL SMILE lives and breathes on its own, offering "When I Was Cruel No. 1," where it's predecessor contained only "No. 2," which is an entirely different composition. Elvis covers the Charlie Chaplin chestnut "Smile" in two different versions, includes live versions of some of his own classics like "Watching the Detectives" and "Uncomplicated," and offers the previously unheard song "Oh Well." It's recommended that you pick up WHEN I WAS CRUEL first, but even as a stand-alone effort, CRUEL SMILE is quite the engaging endeavor.

| | Doors Legacy: The Absolute Best CDs (1967)
Cedar! album
$19.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick and the surviving members of the Doors, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS is a solid tribute to the band.
The first Doors album was an important development in the evolution of rock, representing the dark underbelly of the '60s counterculture, the Jekyll to the Beatles/Beach Boys' Hyde. The Doors were the antithesis of windblown Californian pop. Dark, brooding and alienated, every element of the ...

| | Marian McPartland Timeless CD (2002)
Cedar! music CDs
$10.49 A collection of Marian McPartland trio recordings from 1952-1953, Timeless offers only 13 tracks, but they are certainly quality recordings at that. McPartland is heard in the studio and on six live recordings by Rudy Van Gelder made at the Hickory House in New York City. The cool-toned bop pianist begins playfully ("Strike Up the Band"), but also contributes ruminative explorations of "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "Gypsy in My Soul." Her solos are precise and very enjoyable, and the varying groups behind McPartland provide her with a strong foundation. With few collections available that ...
| | Incredible String Band (1st Album) CD (1966)
Cedar! songs
$10.15 The first album by the Incredible String Band appeared in 1966. Then a trio (Clive Palmer departed after this debut), they melded the folk music of their Scottish homeland with far-flung, adventurous musical influence from around the world. Prior to the advent of so-called "world music," these guys were already exploring the terrain. This release, comprised almost totally of originals, finds them at their most traditional--the trippy inclinations that landed them an audience would begin appearing on their next album, THE 5000 SPIRITS OR THE LAYERS OF THE ONION. Besides being engaging in its own right, THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND is ...

| | Christy Doran Corporate Art CD (1992) (Import)
Cedar! CD music
$15.09 This quartet date by guitarist Christy Doran, bassist Mark Helias, drummer Bobby Previte, and saxophonist Gary Thomas may have been recorded in Europe by Stefan Winter, but its feel is utterly New York. Doran's playing is far more on the jazz-rock than avant tip here, giving the entire proceeding a feeling of that beautiful, edgy walk between composition and improvisation. Thomas -- normally an outside player -- reins himself in as a soloist in order to focus on the sometimes wondrous ensemble playing at the heart of the disc. Each member of the band writes on this set and it's obvious that the groove comes from within. It's knotty, sometimes intense, and often complex, such as on the opener "Blood Sugar," and on Doran's "Heitere Gelassenheit," where staggered arpeggios intersect with scalar riffs to form a kind of contrapuntal melody line. But there are wonderfully elegiac and gently swinging tunes as well, such as the flute-driven swing in Thomas' "Chiaroscuro" or the languid tempos of Helias' "21" and "Bass Minotaur." Helias also offers a jazz-funk workout with "Skin," with furious basslines driving riffed-up guitars and a bleating saxophone that stays in the pocket. The album closes with Previte's beautiful nocturne "Theme for ...
| | Art Farmer To Sweden With Love/Live At The Half Note CD (2004)
Cedar! music CDs
$10.59 This superb two-in-one disc collects a pair of 1964 albums by Art Farmer's quartet, featuring guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Steve Swallow. The first, TO SWEDEN WITH LOVE, contains a program of Swedish folk songs (the track list sports titles like "Den Mostravige Brudgummen [The Reluctant Groom]" and "Och Hor Du Unga Dora [And Listen Young Dora]"). Here the band transforms the melodies, making each one swing gently, and opening up the tunes to intense, meditative explorations. Farmer's ...
