/Stephane Grappelli/Joe Pass/Mickey Roker/Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen.
Recorded live at Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark. Includes original release liner notes by Norman Granz. Originally released on Pablo Live (2308-232).
Pianist Oscar Peterson and violinist Stephane Grappelli meet up on this Scandinavian concert. The "backup" crew (guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Mickey Roker) is not too bad either. In addition to a closing blues (which is highlighted by tradeoffs from Peterson and Grappelli), the quintet performs five veteran standards with creativity and swing. This CD, a straight reissue of a Pablo LP, contains plenty of fine music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Mysterious Voyages: A Tribute To Weather Report CDs (2005)
Skol album
$17.35 This double-CD has 24 different groups of fusion musicians (including some from Europe) paying tribute to Weather Report. Despite the personnel and often the instrumentation changing from track to track, there is a unity to the project and many of the bands sound quite a bit like Weather Report, either purposely as part of the tribute or naturally. The programming is somewhat random and the bands bring back the sound, grooves, and spirits of Weather Report rather than necessarily always sticking to their compositions. All in all, this is a heartfelt and very well-played tribute that can also serve as an introduction to a cross-section of some of today's top fusion musicians, many of whom are not household names yet. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Pat Metheny Song X: Twentieth Anniversary CD (1985) Bonus Tracks
Skol CD music
$15.65 The combination of the popular mainstream jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and pioneering free jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman may seem an odd one. However, their collaboration SONG X reflects their mutual admiration and shared sense of adventure. Fans of Metheny's contemporary jazz may find some aspects of this session hard to swallow. Coleman's followers, however, will feel right at home with the jarring dissonance and dense textures. Joining the pair are the equally adventurous drummer Jack DeJohnette, along with Coleman's drumming son Denardo, and the bassist from his original quartet, Charlie Haden.
Things are blazing right from the start as the frenetic title track explodes with a miasma of lightning-speed ensemble free improvisation. The music gets even more chaotic with the bizarre "Endangered Species," a 13-minute collage of churning freedom with dense thrashes of noise and a hurricane of percussion. However, all works are not so brash; the delicate ballad "Kathelin Gray" displays a softer side with deeply emotive work by Coleman and Metheny. Shades of bebop are also present in the swinging "Trigonometry." In all, listeners will find a new side to both of these astounding artists who obviously have many dimensions to their art.
Released in 1985, Song X was Pat Metheny's first recording for the Geffen label. After a prosperous career with ECM, Metheny realized a lifelong dream by collaborating with Ornette Coleman. (He had previously collaborated with both bassist Charlie Haden (an Ornette alumnus), and drummer Jack DeJohnette. A second drummer, Denardo Coleman, was added for this session and adds immeasurably to the rhythmic complexity of the music here.) Coleman had been a major influence on Metheny's ideas about melody and harmony, as well as space. Song X was the first of a number of deviations from the guitarist and composer's trademark sound and direction. The pairing of the two was jagged and startling when it was first issued. The recording sent his traditional fans reeling and wondering if he'd gone off his rocker. ...
