Guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne were dubbed "the Poll Winners" when they swept the Down Beat, Metronome, and Playboy polls during 1956-1957. They recorded several albums together and this CD reissue features the pianoless trio playing a variety of material, some of it a little odd (including "Volare," "Custard Puff," "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob Bobbin' Along," and "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down"). This is a good outing, particularly for bop guitarist Barney Kessel. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Ray Brown Poll Winners Straight Ahead CD (1975)
Poll Winners Ride Again! music CDs
$8.35 Some sixteen years after their last hit album for Contemporary, the Poll Winners reprised their intuitive, interactive approach to the modern trio with this July 12, 1975 session. STRAIGHT AHEAD is a distillation of everything they've lived since the late '50s, and while their collective infrastructure is still based in the blues, swing and bebop, they now approach their music with an ear for the rhythmic and harmonic innovations of musicians such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and Wes Montgomery.
So if "Blue Boy" begins with a rhythmic vamp suggestive of a popular rock beat of the day, when the players break into their trademark 4/4 blowing section, the years melt away. Drummer Manne reacts to the jamming with a more discursive ear than would have been considered quite polite in 1959, crashing and rolling through Barney Kessel's solo, as the guitarist responds with taut Monkish dissonances and modern harmonies. Their bluesy big band intro to the theme of "Laura," followed by bassist Brown's quicksilver contrapuntal dance, is as witty as any of the jazzy reworkings ...

This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling of Henry Mancini's music from the classic Blake Edwards film with Audrey Hepburn. With a number entitled "Moon River Cha Cha," listeners pretty much know what's in store for them with this set: instrumental treatments of pop music that was riding high both on the airwaves and on the big screen. The tracks are brief and the playing doesn't stray far from the arrangements. The Bossa Nova session is a step closer to jazz, ...

| | Lou Reed Animal Serenade CDs (2004)
Poll Winners Ride Again! album
$12.25 Though the two-disc ANIMAL SERENADE is the sixth live Lou Reed album, it never feels like a rehash of what's come before. This is partly because of its delightful focus on the more obscure corners of Reed's repertoire, and partly due to the unusual format in which the songs are presented. Though Reed's previous live release already employed a scaled-down approach, ANIMAL SERENADE removes the drummer entirely (bassist Fernando Saunders occasionally hits electronic drum pads), and adds a cellist. This gives extra poignancy to reflective ballads like "The Day John Kennedy Died" and the ...

| | Marc Antoine Hi-Lo Split CD (2007)
Poll Winners Ride Again! CD music
$12.29 Paris-born, Madrid-based contemporary jazz guitarist Marc Antoine switches to Peak Records for his eighth newly recorded solo album Hi-Lo Split (a title that reflects his new appreciation for poker), but he doesn't change his overall approach appreciably. Working in his home studio, he does back off of the more hip-hop-oriented Modern Times in the sense that there's no DJ this time. But this is still pretty much standard-issue contemporary jazz. On one tune after another, Antoine sets up a percolating rhythm track, then solos over it, usually using a nylon-string guitar (though occasionally switching to a Mexican requinto guitar), sometimes doubling on a steel-string. Frederic Gaillardet contributes keyboards and some subtle string arrangements, and Andre Manga plays bass. On "Silk & Steel" (its title reflecting the combination of nylon- and steel-string playing), Manuel Machado shadows the solos with a muted trumpet. It's worth remembering while listening ...
