| | Blue Mitchell Big 6 CD Blue Mitchell Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
Trumpeter Blue Mitchell was a virtual unknown when he recorded this Riverside album, his first as a leader. Now reissued on CD in the OJC series, Mitchell is heard in excellent form in an all-star sextet with trombonist Curtis Fuller, tenor great Johnny Griffin, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. In addition to some group originals, obscurities, and the standard "There Will Never Be Another You," the group also plays the earliest recorded version of Benny Golson's "Blues March," predating Art Blakey's famous recording. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in New York, New York on July 2 & 3, 1958. Originally released on Riverside (12-273).
Personnel: Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Wilbur Ware (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).

| | Heart Dreamboat Annie (1st LP) CD (1976)
Big 6 music CDs
$8.85 All songs written or co-written by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.
This is a limited edition "Album Replica" CD of DREAMBOAT ANNIE specially packaged to simulate the original LP design with gatefold sleeve.
Heart's 1976 album, DREAMBOAT ANNIE, is easily one of the '70s best rock debuts. Led by two sisters, singer Ann and guitarist Nancy Wilson, who combined the mystical folk of Joni Mitchell with the heavy metal stomp of Led Zeppelin, the album spawned several hits that have become classic rock radio staples over the years.
Both "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" are red hot rockers (the former is an autobiographical tale from Ann), while the title track is more subdued. DREAMBOAT ANNIE showed the largely male-dominated '70s rock world that the Wilson sisters could rock every bit as hard as their macho peers.
Recorded at Can-Base Studios, Vancouver, Canada.
Personnel: Ann Wilson (vocals, flute), Nancy Wilson (6- & 12-string acoustic guitars, electric guitar, background vocals), Roger Fisher (acoustic, electric & lap steel guitars), Howard Leese (guitar, synthesizer, bells), "Before Dawn" Geoff Foubert (banjo, background ...

Volume One of the RODGERS AND HART SONGBOOK was one of Ella Fitzgerald's most artistically and commercially successful albums, so obviously a sequel was called for. You'd be forgiven for expecting lukewarm leftovers, but given the range and depth of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's catalogue, it's not entirely surprising that THE RODGERS AND HART SONGBOOK VOLUME TWO is even better than the original.
Opening with the little-known but wonderfully sly New York love song "Give It Back To The Indians," VOLUME TWO sprints through 16 other Rodgers and Hart classics in just over 56 minutes, including their early gems "There's a Small Hotel" and "Mountain Greenery," an exquisite "Blue Moon," and one of the very best of the seemingly hundreds of versions of the standard "My Funny Valentine." This is a remarkable tribute to one of pop music's greatest songwriting teams.
This was the second of the Song Books that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for the Verve label in the mid 1950s. The brilliant Nelson Riddle hadn't yet signed on, but Verve staff arranger Buddy Bregman was fully up to the task of providing musical settings for Ella's letter-perfect readings of these lyrical and witty gems. Fitzgerald's voice, with its uncanny bell-like timbre, was the perfect vehicle for conveying the sheer beauty of "Spring Is Here," "It Never Entered My Mind," "I Could Write a Book," et al. On the other side, the exuberant "The Lady Is a Tramp" beats Sinatra at his own swingin' game yet retains the ladylike dignity which characterized Ella Fitzgerald even when she was having the most fun.
This second and final volume of Ella Fitzgerald's superb Rodgers & Hart songbook matches the high standard of the first, thanks to another beguiling mix of ballads and swingers. Once again, arranger Buddy ...
