| | George Russell Outer View CD George Russell Discography of CDs
By all rights, pianist/composer George Russell should be more widely known outside the jazz world. His LYDIAN CHROMATIC CONCEPT, one of the first music-theory books written by a jazz musician, influenced such players as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Russell's compositions are not mere frameworks for improvisation. Though filled with unexpected twists and turns, his thoughtful, knotty tunes never sacrifice drive and passion.
On THE OUTER VIEW, a session from 1962, Russell's pieces elicit inspired, committed performances from his sidepeople. Don Ellis' trumpet crackles on the title track, which goes back-and-forth between smooth yet high-flying swing and quirky dissonance. In the hands of Russell's band and guest jazz-singer Sheila Jordan, sentimental chestnut "You are My Sunshine" becomes an exploratory soundscape. The musicians take this standard where it has never gone before, stretching the song out and warping it, leading it down bluesy alleys and up into innovative skyscrapers, as Jordan's sensuous voice draws from gospel, blues, and country. Throughout the album, Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca provide the anchor of a powerful rhythm section while soaring along with the music.
Recorded in August 1962. Originally released on Riverside (9940).
Personnel: George Russell (piano); Sheila Jordan (vocals); Don Ellis (trumpet); Garnett Brown (trombone); Steve Swallow (acoustic bass); Pete La Roca (drums); Paul Plummer.

$10.65 A letter to the listeners: It's no secret, I also like listening to music, all kinds. For me there's nothing more enjoyable than some time on my hands, my favourite armchair, a set of good headphones and a CD full of good sounds. It could be instrumental music or with lyrics. Classical, jazz, folk, rock or blues and all that good stuff that fits over, under, around, through and in between. That's what you'll hear on this album, a type of hybrid derived from all those sounds that I enjoy so much, though nothing really pure, more of an amalgamation of their essential elements, more around and in between than anything else. There's something else you should know. I like conceptual things. Like words. Like concept albums. This is a concept album. I'm hoping that there are other people out there like me who relish listening intently from beginning to end to all the bits and pieces that make up a composite whole. People who enjoy following a fine thread of thought that somehow links all the given elements under a common theme. My future is envisioned with concept albums. Of course, if you're one that isn't of this temperament, I believe you'll still be able to listen randomly to the songs and be able to enjoy them individually and by themselves. But for the record, right from the start, right down to the choice of the album cover, there was a deliberate effort to conceptualize, to generate a thinking process. It's more prose than poetry. Conceptualizing. ...

$18.99 Marvin O’Dell grew up listening to the music of the silver screen cowboys (Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Rex Allen, etc.) and became a huge fan of western artists like Marty Robbins and Billy Walker. Marvin’s father was a fan of western music and would sing many of the classic cowboy songs to him. In time, he began to discover the music of more contemporary western singers like Ian Tyson, Don Edwards, and Michael Martin Murphey. While working as a disc jockey for KCSN FM-radio in Northridge, CA, Marvin suggested that the station begin a cowboy/western music program. Station ...
