Personnel: Shelly Manne, Joe Gordon, Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Monty Budwig. Originally released on Contemporary (7577). Personnel: Shelly Manne (drums); Richie Kamuca (tenor saxophone); Joe Gordon (trumpet); Victor Feldman (piano). Liner Note Author: Lester Koenig. Recording information: Black Hawk, San Francisco, CA (09/22/1959-09/24/1959). Unknown Contributor Roles: Victor Feldman; Joe Gordon; Monty Budwig; Richie Kamuca. Shelly Manne's Quintet was recorded extensively at San Francisco's Black Hawk club for three nights in 1959. Although not the most significant group that the drummer led, this edition (with trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman, and bassist Monty Budwig) was certainly capable of playing high-quality bebop. Originally their output was released on four LPs; the reissue expanded the music to five CDs. The first volume adds an alternate take of Frank Rosolino's "Blue Daniel" to a set that includes swinging versions of "Blue Daniel," "Poinciana," "Our Delight," and "Summertime." The extended performances are easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (1960) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "..The group feeling is so strong on this LP that it will reach out and grab you. Manne has never sounded better...strongly recommended as excellent contemporary jazz captured in its lair.." | | Veruca Salt Eight Arms To Hold You CD (1997)
At The Black Hawk, Vol. 1
$6.49 Veruca Salt: Nina Gordon, Louise Post (vocals, guitar); Steve Lack (guitar, bass); Jim Shapiro (guitar, drums, background vocals). Recorded at Wicked Wahine, Haiku, Maui, Hawaii between July and September 1996. Personnel: Louise Post, Nina Gordon (vocals, guitar); Jim Shapiro (guitar, drums, background vocals); Steve Lack (guitar); Jim McGillveray (percussion). Audio Mixer: Randy Staub . Recording information: Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, IL; Warehouse Studio, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Wicked Wahinhe, Haiku, Maui, HI. Picture Joan Jett at her altruistic peak creating sparks in the studio by chomping at the bit proffered by a calculating -- but astute and sympathetic -- Svengali, and you have a fair grasp of Eight Arms to Hold You. In fact, ferocious lead single "Volcano Girls" holds its own in the classic, dumb-ass, slashing hard rock singles sweepstakes with Jett's own "I Love Rock'n'Roll." This destructive blast only clears the terrain for some of the album's ...

| | Michael Paulo My Heart & Soul CD (1996)
At The Black Hawk, Vol. 1
$16.45 Michael Paulo One of the most versatile and cosmopolitan saxophonists in pop, soul and contemporary jazz for over 25 years, Michael Paulo has added his distinct saxpertise to a virtual who's who of artists, including Al Jarreau (Paulo's longest term touring association), James Ingram, No. 1 Smooth Jazz Trumpeter and guitarist Rick Braun and Peter White, Oleta Adams, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin, Jeffrey Osborne, Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Carl Anderson, Bobby Caldwell, Johnny Mathis and more. Paulo grew up in a musical family (his father a pianist, his mother a singer, his siblings all playing instruments) and though he came upon the sax relatively late at age 15, he quickly became first horn player in his high school band and was playing professional gigs around the islands within a few years. Rather than accept a scholarship to North Texas State, he chose a more adventurous road by joining Hawaiian pop/rock band Kalapana, which had some success on the mainland but was most popular in Japan. After playing regularly and recording on all four of Kalapana's albums from 1975 through 1979, Paulo recorded a solo album for Japanese release on Trio records. In addition ...

| | Johnny Griffin JG CD (1956) Remastered; Digipak
At The Black Hawk, Vol. 1
$9.89 Personnel: Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Junior Mance (piano); Wilbur Ware (bass guitar); Buddy Smith (drums). As a CD reissue, it's a crime that this very first outing by Johnny Griffin as a leader is only available from Japan in an irritating paper sleeve that comes apart down the center. OK, enough bitching. Here's the skinny: Griffin's first date featured the saxophonist in the company of Junior Mance on piano, bassist Wilbur Ware, and session drummer Buddy Smith. The program features eight tunes that ...
