Personnel: Shelly Manne, Joe Gordon, Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Monty Budwig. Originally released on Contemporary (7580). Shelly Manne's 1959 quintet (with trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Monty Budwig, and the drummer/leader) was not his most important, but it was a hard-swinging unit well versed in bebop. Their three days at the Black Hawk (a popular San Francisco jazz club during this era) was almost completely documented, originally on four LPs and now expanded to five CDs. As with the first three sets, the fourth volume adds an alternate take (of "Cabu") to the original program ("Cabu," "Just Squeeze Me," "Nightingale," and a full-length version of their theme, "A Gem from Tiffany"). The lengthy solos are consistently excellent, making this entire series recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4 Music Shelly Manne At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4 Songs At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4 Music Review Buy At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4 CD Purchase At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4 CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Shelly Manne At The Black Hawk, Vol. 1 CD (1960)

| | Tribute To Curtis Mayfield CD (1994)
At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4
$7.99 Producers include: Attala Zane Giles, Gladys Knight, Steve Winwood, Gary Katz, Genji Siraisi. Engineers include: Andrew Brown, Mick Dolan, Carlos Glover. A fabulous assortment of artists from different areas of the rock genre give a glorifying tribute to Curtis Mayfield in a sparkling 17-song package. Stevie Winwood does a partying rendition of "It's All Right"; a version of "Let's Do It Again" is performed by Mayfield and the Repercussions that mimics the Staple Singers' original; Mayfield does Roebuck "Pops" Staples' parts. Bruce Springsteen tackles an early Impressions classic, "Gypsy Woman," and makes the mystical song even more eerie. The number of producers equals the artists ...

| | Hallelujah The Hills Collective Psychosis Begone CD (2007)
At The Black Hawk, Vol. 4
$13.05 Hallelujah the Hills: Joe Marrett, Brian Rutledge, David Bentley, Eric Meyer , Ryan Walsh, Matthew Brown. Additional personnel: Evan Sicuranza, Lilian Belknap, Derek Mueller, Deirdre Ilkson, David Curry. Born from the ashes of the Massachusetts-based indie-rock act the Stairs, Hallelujah the Hills offers up a vibrant collection of ramshackle yet melodic tunes on its 2007 debut, COLLECTIVE PSYCHOSIS BEGONE. While the sextet's gleefully off-the-cuff approach may garner comparisons to Guided By Voices, Hallelujah's knack for bold arrangements distinguishes the young group from its renowned elders, as evinced on its horn-and-keyboard-drenched "fight song," appropriately entitled "Hallelujah the Hills." Any indie rock album circa 2007 with song titles like "Raise the Flag of Your Sibling's Favorite Daydream" and "It's All Been Downhill Since the Talkies Started to Sing" makes one yearn for the simplicity of "Yeah" -- and it doesn't matter whether that means Usher or LCD Soundsystem. As it stands, Collective Psychosis Begone shows clearly that Hallelujah the Hills know their genre and ability and know them all too well -- indie rock as dramatic production and presentation, another logical end product that ...
