| | Cal Tjader Primo CD Cal Tjader Discography of CDs
This CD brings back one of Cal Tjader's best late-period recordings and finds the vibraphonist adapting his 1950s Latin jazz concept to the 1970s without losing any vitality. Tjader is joined by four horns, the legendary keyboardist Charlie Palmieri, electric bassist Bobby Rodriguez, and six percussionists; Tito Puente (who plays timbales on Mario Bauza's "Tanga") and Palmieri provided the heated arrangements. A previously unreleased alternate take of "Bang Bang" is added to the CD reissue. Highly recommended to collectors of Latin jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Jose Merino, Louis Laurita, Jack Jeffers, Bobby Nelson, Charlie Palmieri, Bobby Rodriguez, Enrique Davila, Tito Puente, Ismael Quintana, Victor Aviles, Victor Velasquez, William Rodriguez, Luis Rodriguez.

Primo music CDs
$14.65 There's probably a good reason why the excellent soundtrack to the Steve McQueen film BULLITT, originally recorded in 1968, wasn't released on CD until 20 years later, but the important thing is that it now exists, and Lalo Shifrin fans can rest easy. By the late '60s, Shifrin had already built an impressive body of work, scoring jazz arrangements for top acts and working in television (his theme for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is permanently ingrained in the cultural memory), so that by the time he scored BULLITT his skills were at their peak.
Like the film, the BULLITT soundtrack is both slick and action-packed, with lots of rhythmic, jazzy themes, burbling basslines, and brassy horns used to enhance the drama. These sections are counterbalanced by softer, ...
| | Cool Hand Luke - Original Soundtracks Cool Hand Luke CD (1967)
Primo songs
$14.29 Lalo Schifrin's soundtrack to the 1967 chain-gang drama starring Paul Newman concentrates on the sounds and instruments of rural America, from the use of banjos and harmonica in the main title and the standout "Tar Sequence" to the shuffled-feet rhythm on his soul-jazz arrangement of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." Throughout, Cool Hand Luke echoes the claustrophobic prison atmosphere, with Schifrin moving from playfulness to violence, to tenderness with little warning. Indie-rock fans will probably recognize the skeletal banjo tune "Plastic Jesus" from the Flaming Lips' version, recorded for 1993's Transmissions From the Satellite Heart. ~ John Bush
Of all the film scores Lalo Schifrin has composed -- good and bad, and yes, he's done some stinkers -- the score to Stuart Rosenberg's 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, a star vehicle for Paul Newman, is among his greatest achievements. First, there is the score itself, ...

| | Terry Gibbs Dream Band, Vol. 1 CD (1959)
Primo CD music
$12.35 The music on this CD, not released for the first time until 1986, features the formerly little-known Terry Gibbs Big Band, an orchestra that worked fairly regularly in Los Angeles from 1959-1962. The repertoire is primarily swing-era standards, but the arrangements (by Bill Holman, Bob Brookmeyer, Al Cohn, Marty Paich, and Manny Albam) are fairly modern for the time; the all-star group's ensembles are tight and such colorful soloists as vibraphonist Gibbs, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, trumpeters Stu Williamson and Conte Candoli, tenorman Bill Holman, pianist Pete Jolly, and altoist Joe ...

$16.05 This CD was recorded using Sony Direct Stream Digital & Super Bit Mapping technology.
Recorded live at the Blue Note, New York, New York from November 24-26, 1998. Includes liner notes by Alyn Shipton.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Oscar Peterson's landmark meeting with Milt Jackson in the mid-'60s produced the very successful studio date Very Tall. They've played and recorded together on a number of occasions since then, joined by Ray Brown more often than not, but these live tracks recorded at the Blue Note are among their most satisfying sessions. Peterson continues his strong comeback from the serious stroke that he suffered in 1993, replacing his once ferocious tempos with an ...
