Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1993, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).

Tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons recorded this set with the backing of an organ trio, one of his favorite instrumental formats. PREACHIN' was recorded in Chicago in 1962 and spotlights Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson, whose organ embraces both the sound of a Baptist church and a smoky nightclub. Fittingly, this set primarily comprises gospel numbers, which were quite popular with jazz players at the time.

Ammons' rich tone evokes the zeal of a choir singer as well as the testifying of a preacher. The balladry is particularly moving--"You'll Never Walk Alone" and "I Believe" are standouts. Ammons recorded a large body of music, and all of his recordings with organ combos are worthy titles. PREACHIN' is a fine place to start, as is THE GENE AMMONS STORY: THE ORGAN COMBOS.

Barry Harris Bull's Eye! CD  (1968)

Preachin' CD music
CD $9.89  4 stars Top 500
In the liner notes that he wrote for Bull's Eye in 1968, Mark Gardner quotes pianist Walter Bishop as calling Barry Harris "one of the very last of the bebop purists that we have on the piano." Bishop knew what he was talking about; back in 1968, many acoustic pianists were choosing modal post-bop or avant-garde jazz over bop -- and some were taking up electric keyboards and starting to explore a fascinating new jazz-rock-funk amalgam that came to be called fusion. But Harris, who was 38 when he recorded Bull's Eye, was still a hardcore bebopper along the lines of Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. On this 1968 session, the Detroit native offers no acknowledgment of '60s trends in jazz piano -- he doesn't acknowledge McCoy Tyner's modal post-bop any more than he acknowledges Cecil Taylor's free jazz. And that's just as well, because Harris is great at what he does. Unlike Tyner, Taylor, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, or Andrew Hill, Harris was always a follower rather than a leader. But again, he's great at what he does, and on Bull's Eye, Harris excels whether he is embracing Monk's "Off Minor" or providing original tunes that range from the exhilarating title song to the Latin-tinged ...

CD $8.39  5 stars Audio Samples
Sonny Stitt was in one of his prime periods during the early '70s and this LP finds him in particularly creative form. Best is the 14-minute "Miss Ann, Lisa, Sue and Sadie" which features Stitt, trumpeter Thad Jones, guitarist Billy Butler, and pianist Hank Jones soloing over a small string section; Jones' arrangement is quite memorable. Although the other four selections are not quite at the same level, Stitt is in top form throughout this inventive date. ~ Scott Yanow Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and ...

Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD  (2005)

CD $16.65  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying Max Roach as Sid Catlett on "Salt Peanuts." (Catlett does sit in on "Hot House" in a more supportive than demonstrative role.) The tracks with the ...

Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD  (2005)

Preachin' album
CD $13.75  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most ...

Dave Holland Critical Mass CD  (2006)

Preachin' CD music
CD $13.59  4.3 stars Audio Samples
One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, ...
