Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 7, 1964. Includes liner notes by Michael Gold.
Digitally remastered by Alan Yoshida using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology (Ocean Way/JVC Mastering).
Coaxing a great tone from an electric guitar is harder than it looks, and on his Prestige records Kenny Burrell consistently plays with both warmth and bite. His combination of deep blues sensibilities and thorough finesse, tempered with a considerable taste for understatement, earned the guitarist a well-deserved reputation for delivering the goods in the late '50s and early '60s.
SOUL CALL is yet another great Burrell record. On "Here's That Rainy Day," he epitomizes all that is cool in jazz guitar, framing his lush chord-melody statement using a minimum of voicings, and burning up the changes without ever overplaying, sacrificing clarity or compromising his tone, all while infusing an achingly beautiful standard with a graceful blue tinge. He then repeats this achievement in a harder-swinging vein on "Lucky So and So" and on the ballad "A Sleepin' Bee. "Mark One" is an uptempo cooker by pianist Will Davis; Burrell himself contributes two blues, the late-night, conga-fueled slink of the title cut and the relentlessly jumping "Kenny's Theme." "Oh Henry," the bonus track, is the blues again, from a bebop perspective.
Recorded on April 7, 1964.
Personnel: Kenny Burrell (guitar); Will Davis (piano); Martin Rivera (bass); Bill English (drums); Ray Barretto (congas).

Soul Call album
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Get this album just for the opener, "Don't Cry Baby," originally a vocal tune cut by the Erskine Hawkins band. It purrs along in that low-key, swinging blues vein that can utterly unwind and relax you after just eight bars, and keeps it cooking that way for another eight minutes. Cecil Payne's warm, conversational tone has none of that abrasive edge that can plague the baritone saxophone, and the rest of the band will be familiar to fans of this era. Tommy Flanagan and Doug Watkins are well chosen confreres, sharing Burrell's taste for a down-home, understated approach to the bop vocabulary, and Elvin Jones' brushwork is the low blue flame underneath it all.
"Drum Boogie," Jones' only tune on sticks, is another blues, with an interesting trading scheme between baritone and guitar. Burrell frames the head chord-melody style in conjunction with Payne on Bud Powell's "Strictly Confidential," and takes on the set's ballad, ...

Records like ALL DAY LONG once seemed like the reason long-playing vinyl was invented--to give ordinary mortals the sense of eavesdropping on a clique of talented improvisers stretching out after hours, away from the time confines of the three-minute 78, or the commercial demands of the nightclub and radio world. Later, critics derided the "blowing session" as a rip-off in which fans spent good money on a release only to get--well, a clique of talented improvisers stretching out away from the limitations of the 78, nightclub or radio broadcast. In fact, harnessing looseness and creativity ...
| | Jack McDuff Crash! CD (1994)
Soul Call music CDs
$7.99 Organist Jack McDuff has long had a powerful style and the two former LPs that are combined on this single CD offer some strong examples of his accessible playing. In both cases McDuff is joined by guitarist Kenny Burrell (in fact one of the two sets was originally under Burrell's name), drummer Joe Dukes and occasionally Ray Barretto on congas. In addition Harold Vick is on tenor for most selections and Eric Dixon ...
| | Kenny Burrell At The Five Spot Cafe CD (1959)
Soul Call songs
$9.15 Kenny Burrell and Art Blakey played together infrequently during their careers, so this meeting of jazz minds is a welcome occasion. A rather short set issued here from club dates at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City must have meant there were other nights of recordings that did not make it for public consumption, or that Burrell simply sat in. No matter the configuration, this is come what may jazz that has no pressurized content, and a relaxed atmosphere allowing the music to organically breathe and come alive naturally. This loose but tight feeling comes to the fore right away on Dizzy Gillespie's "Birk's Works," a rather polite version as Burrell tosses out his discriminating ...

| | Nils Petter Molvaer An American Compilation CD (2006)
Soul Call CD music
$13.85 Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer was first introduced to American audiences via his two fine ECM recordings, Khmer and Solid Ether. Manfred Eicher took a brave step by issuing music so far outside his label's aesthetic and showcasing a voice utterly different musically, but not strategically, from Jon Hassell's. Molvaer has been deeply influenced by Miles Davis and his sense of rhythm, dynamic, and texture are in many ways updates of the Dark Magus' vamp-driven sound as it collides with contemporary synthetic rhythms and atmospherics. He works with some of the finest musicians and DJ/producers in Northern Europe and the U.K. including vocalist Sidsel Endresen, Pal "Strangefruit" Nyhus, guitarist Eivind Aarset, and drummer Rune Arnesen to name a few. Thirsty Ear seems a better fit for Molvaer, who walks the tightrope between jazz, electronica, and ambient musics with ease and his own sense of rhythmic, harmonic, and dimensional atmospheres. An American Compilation is an excellent and sometimes jarring look at Molvaer's musical past and points to the directions he's leaning toward and reveals how he can, depending on his collaborators, continually reinvent ...
