Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1995, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
The Count Basie Orchestra has been on the move since the mid-1930's; even the Count's death in 1984 couldn't stop his band from keeping on; thus, ON THE ROAD is an especially appropriate title for this 1979 release. Producer Norman Granz had the band record in a studio before an invited audience; the result was a truly inspired studio session.
The repertoire featured here includes compositions by Basie stalwarts, most notably, Ernie Wilkins, Bobby Plater, Sammy Nestico, and Neal Hefti. What raw yet controlled energy this band has! On "There Will Never Be Another You," an extended trumpet solo drives the band with vigor; Mickey Roker's virtuoso drumming on the opening track, "Wind Machine" is especially compelling. Basie even features himself (a rare occurrence) on "Bootie's Blues," a down-home stride piano number. These are but a few of the many superb ingredients of ON THE ROAD. This album is truly a gem.

On The Road
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
FARMER'S MARKET BARBECUE represents the later period in Count Basie's career. Basie always maintained a firm grasp on his music; his concept never wavered or faltered when it came to good, down-home swing. Basie's music always contained elements of group interplay. In his later years, his music was much more highly arranged; however, an impromptu approach to jazz still pervaded his work. If spontaneity was the mark of the Kansas City days, lightheartedness permeated his later efforts.
This is most clearly displayed on tracks such as "Lester Leaps In" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside." On the latter, the Count and his orchestra sustain a light and buoyant swing while still infusing the music with lively ...
| | Count Basie 88 Basie Street CD (1983)
On The Road
$10.15 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
While this is one of Count Basie's final albums, he's still in superb musical shape on this 1983 release. His band swings with the same kind of conviction and intimacy that made it famous during the Depression.
However there's a more contemporary feel to Basie's orchestra on 88 BASIE STREET; Cleveland Eaton plays all electric bass guitar, and saxophonist Eric Dixon and others contribute bop-inflected solos on "Contractor's Blues" and "The Blues Machine". ...

This Raven reissue combines both records onto one CD, with the addition of the way-cool psychedelic soul outing "Hole in Your Soul" (from the Games People Play album) as a bonus track.
