On two days in 1969, pianist Phineas Newborn recorded enough material for two albums (the other is titled Harlem Blues), which is fortunate because these were his only recordings of the 1965-73 period. Unfortunately, neither set has been reissued on CD yet. Newborn, who is joined by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Elvin Jones, performs a blues and bop set which includes such tunes as "Rough Ridin'," "He's a Real Gone Guy," "Little Niles" and his own "Brentwood Blues." The emphasis generally is on vintage tunes, and Newborn shows throughout that he was still very much in his musical prime. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in February 1969.
Personnel includes: Phineas Newborn Jr. (piano); Ray Brown (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

Please Send Me Someone To Love album
$6.75 Recorded in New York, New York between November 6, 1962 and March 29, 1963.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
CRISS-CROSS is the result of five sessions with the ever-present Charlie Rouse on tenor plus the rhythm compliment of drummer Frankie Dunlop and bassist John Ore. It was recorded at a time when Monk had actually become a popular beat icon; his iconoclast mug appeared on the cover of Time barely a year later.
While the majority of the material here is Monk's, his whimsical way with the two standards, "Tea For Two" and "Don't Blame Me," makes them special treats. The former is like an old suitcase bursting at the seams with zany new toys, the melody rife with Monk's truncated chromatic tails, his solo chunky with erratic-sounding bass comping, all of it amusingly bookended ...

"When We Dance" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Emerging from new wave on the wings of hits like "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me," the Police perfected an appealing synthesis of reggae, pop and freewheeling instrumental flourishes rooted in the power trio conventions of earlier electric blues bands.
Yet for all the elemental tension Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland brought to each arrangement, Sting's keening tenor and canny ear for melodic hooks propelled the band's popularity. ...
| | Stephanie Nakasian Invitation To An Escapade CD (2001)
Please Send Me Someone To Love CD music
$12.09 Of Armenian descent, vocalist Stephanie Nakasian first gained prominence in the mid-'80s when she hooked up with vocalese master Jon Hendricks. Since then, she appeared in a number of venues including TV slots and clubs. This is a no-frills performance. Nakasian sings straight from the heart with rapt attention to the lyrics that makes her one of the top storytellers on the contemporary scene. At the same time, Nakasian often comes across as a torch singer in a nightclub scene in one of those film noir movies from the 1940s. For her fourth album, she has selected an agenda of tunes which include familiar classic standards, material that's not so well-known, and new works. On some cuts, she includes a short narrative, setting the scene for the song she is about to sing as on "No Moon at All." This 1949 ditty made popular by Nat King Cole is a good example of the subdued swing found on this CD. It also allows Bob Hallahan to show off on piano as he quotes from a couple of popular standards during a longish solo. Husband, arranger, and vibes player Hod O'Brien joins in on vocals for Argentina composer Pepe Gonzales' "Just for You." It's also an occasion for some scatting and a strong guitar solo by Steve Brown. Showing a little more than normal versatility, the usually hauntingly played "Invitation" ...
| | Matt Wilson Humidity CD (2003)
Please Send Me Someone To Love music CDs
$9.79 Matt Wilson is the sort of jazz musician who insists on keeping his options open. The flexible drummer/percussionist is comfortable in straightahead situations, but he is also well acquainted with the pleasures of the avant-garde--and Humidity falls into that category. This 2002 date finds Wilson favoring an inside/outside approach, and he does so while leading a pianoless quartet that includes two reedmen (Andrew D'Angelo and Jeff Lederer) and bassist Yousuke Inoue (who is heard on both the acoustic and electric models). Three other musicians are listed as "very special guests"--violinist Felicia Wilson, trumpeter John Carlson and trombonist Curtis Hasselbring--but the members of the quartet are the main players. Humidity gets off to a very Ornette Coleman-influenced start with the opener "Thank You, Billy Higgins," which recalls the late Higgins' work with ...
