Oliver Nelson Big Band includes: George Barrow, Seldon Powell (tenor saxophone); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Chris Woods (piano); Mundell Lowe (guitar); Richard Davis (bass); Ed Shaughnessy (drums).
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
A popular yet underrated tenor saxophonist, Jimmy Forrest is featured in several different settings on this 1998 CD reissue. Forrest matches wits with fellow tenors King Curtis and Oliver Nelson on "Soul Street" (his opening phrase is a classic), plays three standards (including an effective "Sonny Boy") with a combo that includes pianist Hugh Lawson and is featured on "I Wanna Blow, Blow, Blow" with a nonet also featuring trombonist Buster Cooper. The remainder of the CD has Forrest showcased on three numbers with an octet arranged by Oliver Nelson. These tracks are of lesser interest (particularly Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror") but still include some fine tenor playing. With this reissue, all of Forrest's work for the Prestige and New Jazz labels has been made available on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

There was a strong jazz vibe running through some of Philip Bailey's sides with Earth, Wind & Fire. On Soul on Jazz, his second release for Heads Up International, co-producer Bailey remakes several jazz standards, some with new lyrics by his son, Sir Bailey. The foray is most successful on Thelonious Monk's "Ruby My Dear," a percussive take on Gene McDaniels' "Compared to What," and Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." R&B and jazz stylishly intersect on the ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band l Things To Come CD (2002)
Soul Street CD music
$9.65 Recorded live at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in September 2000. Includes liner notes by Phil Schaap.
The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars are a "ghost" band of sorts run by trumpeter and Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis. Recorded to celebrate the music and memory of Gillespie, Things to Come is a fiery live recording made in September of 2000 at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild; all proceeds from the sale of this disc go directly to the Craftsmen's Guild's minority-focused arts and learning center. Featuring various Gillespie band alumni, from saxophonist Jimmy Heath to trombonist Slide Hampton, the album features updated arrangements of Gillespie originals and songs associated with the innovative jazz icon. The ...
| | Lee Morgan Search For The New Land CD (1964) Remastered
Soul Street music CDs
$8.85 This release is something of a departure for the bold trumpet stylist. After the Latin-tinged dance-floor jams of THE SIDEWINDER (released about six months prior to this disc), Morgan turns somewhat reflective. The music is quieter, with a good deal of structural space and restrained, almost ...

$16.05 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
ILLUMINATIONS finds McCoy Tyner, some 40 years after his best-known work (as a member of John Coltrane's legendary early-1960s quartet), still kicking. Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the ...

Soul Street songs
$13.89 One either loves Mark Murphy's style or one does not. The veteran vocalist is at his best when scatting, Jon Hendricks-like, on flat-out bebop numbers such as Tadd Dameron's "There's No More Blue Time" and Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark." ...
