Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
The essence of this set is Charlie Parker's numerous variations on "I Got Rhythm" and Parker's key blues-based tunes, such as "Confirmation." The result is a spirited, highly communicative session, where pianist Hampton Hawes gets to the core of the bop idiom. It's a mystery why these tracks from 1956 and 1958 went unreleased until 1999. They come from a key creative period in Hawes' career when he was enjoying new levels of commercial and critical acclaim. Regardless, the music has now been done justice in a well-mastered release that will please fans of Hawes and of bop piano in general. From a lesser artist, the dry, unadorned, direct style at the center of Hawes' playing could expose technical vulnerabilities. In Hawes' case, it exposes a natural, fluent grace of phrasing and rhythm. Each track is a freshly interpreted joy ride across familiar chord changes. Bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Larance Marable, not Hawes' regular partners from this period, are prominent, supportive parts of the pianist's heartbeat. Besides the Parker originals and Parker-derived themes, there are fine versions of several standards, "Yesterdays" and "Stella by Starlight" being just two deliriously swinging highlights. The three tracks from a 1958 date, with Scott LaFaro on bass and Frank Butler on drums, maintain the same joyous pulse of the earlier tracks. ~ Jim Todd

| | Luther Hughes & The Cannonball-Coltrane Project CD (2005)
Bird Song CD music
$15.19 Bassist Luther Hughes has put together an excellent tribute to both Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, yet without sticking exclusively to the most familiar compositions or even songs that one or the other actually recorded. Hughes, the longtime bassist for the late Gene Harris, features tenor saxophonist Glenn Cashman and alto saxophonist Bruce Babad, both of whom show the influence of the respective players while showing some individualism in their styles. Tom Ranier and Ed Czach alternate on piano, while drummer Paul Kreibich (who worked in the Gene Harris Quartet alongside Hughes) anchors the rhythm section. They open the session with a breezy take of Tadd Dameron's "Super Jet," following it with a soulful arrangement by the leader of Coltrane's "Bass Blues." Cashman's simmering reworking of Coltrane's "Impressions" is less adventurous than the composer's typical recordings, but it also works well as a more subtle arrangement. Hughes' fluid bassline powers the inspired saxophone battle in "Limehouse Blues," with both saxophonists coming out winners. Conga player Tom Poingsett is added for Kreibich's catchy samba "Partido Mar Vista." This session easily merits a follow-up recording. ~ Ken Dryden
Released in December of 2004, This exciting debut CD features swinging, straight-ahead jazz from bassist/leader Luther Hughes and his top-notch cohorts, known collectively as "The Cannonball-Coltrane Project."Initially formed as an homage to the 1959 Cannonball Adderley-John Coltrane landmark album, "The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago," the group continues to pay tribute to these jazz giants with arrangements and original compositions related to or inspired by Cannonball and/or Coltrane. The Cannonball-Coltrane Project has received accolades from their musical peers, including Howard Rumsey, Red Holloway, Horace Silver, Mundell Lowe, and Cannonball's drummer for 11 years, Roy McCurdy.ABOUT THE ALBUM:I was sitting around one day listening to "The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago," a landmark album recorded in 1959. This album was the only time Cannonball and Coltrane appeared together on record other than their work with Miles Davis. As I was listening to this album I thought it might be fun to re-create and perform the original arrangements. While I was mulling over this idea, two dear friends came to mind--Glenn Cashman and Bruce Babad--who were big fans of both Cannonball and Trane. For the rhythm section, I called upon two old friends, Tom Ranier and Paul Kreibich. (In '04, when Tom was unavailable for a gig, I asked Ed Czach, the pianist from Paul's quintet, The Jazz Coop, to help us out. I couldn't have made a better call, as you can hear on this CD. I feel very lucky to have two great players to share the piano duties.)Everyone was as interested in this idea as I was, so we all did our homework on our individual parts, We played our first gig on June 20, 2002 in Southern California and the audience response was overwhelming. After a couple of gigs doing just the original material, the question was, "Where do we go from here?" After that original '59 LP and ...
