Digitally remastered by Phil DeLancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
Years before Paul Horn became famous for his pioneering new age and mood music albums, he was an adventurous bop-based improviser trying to create an alternative to the hard bop music of the era. On this CD reissue of a set cut for Hi Fi, Horn plays alto, flute and clarinet on six complex originals (four are by the leader) in a quintet with vibraphonist Emil Richards, pianist Paul Moer, bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Billy Higgins. All of the music is pretty episodic with tricky frameworks and some unusual time signatures being utilized. The results are generally stimulating if rarely all that relaxed; Richards is actually the most impressive soloist on the interesting if often dry release. ~ Scott Yanow

$14.69 Over the years, bop has had its share of summit sessions -- that is, sessions in which three or four people are playing the same instrument. Prestige was big on summits in the '50s; back then, the label's A&R department seemed to be especially fond of tenor sax, alto sax, and trumpet summits. But flute summits have been a rarity in bop, which has a lot to do with the fact that the flute hasn't been among jazz's more prominent wind instruments; in jazz, flutists have always been greatly outnumbered by trumpeters and saxophonists. A rare example of a flute summit, First Date finds three flutists -- Frank Wess, Holly Hofmann, and Ali Ryerson -- forming ...

| | Nick Bisesi Gemini CD (2005)
Something Blue
$13.49 Gemini, Nick Bisesi's second CD as a leader, indicates that when it comes to jazz, the tenor saxophonist really gets it. What does he get? A number of things. Bisesi realizes that jazz musicians aren't obligated to play an abundance of overdone warhorses; except for Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You," everything on this CD is a Bisesi original. He realizes that while intellect is a valuable part of jazz, feeling and expression are equally -- if not more -- important. He realizes that jazz musicians don't need a Manhattan address to be legitimate; after living in the Big Apple, Bisesi moved to Chicago (where he recorded Gemini in 2005). And he realizes that music other than jazz has merit -- Bisesi has backed his share of R&B and pop artists, although Gemini is essentially a straight-ahead post-bop outing. The saxman brings a long list of influences to this session, including Wayne Shorter, Joe Farrell, Michael Brecker, ...
