| | Dizzy Reece Asia Minor CD Dizzy Reece Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This is one of trumpeter Dizzy Reece's finest recordings, a well-planned sextet date (reissued on CD) with baritonist Cecil Payne, Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Charlie Persip that is on the level of a Blue Note album. Reece (who contributed three diverse originals) performs mostly minor-toned songs that seem to really inspire the musicians. The solos tend to be concise but quite meaningful, and, overall, this hard bop but occasionally surprising session is quite memorable. Strange that Reece would not get another opportunity to lead a record date until 1970. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Dizzy Reece, Cecil Payne, Joe Farrell, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Charlie Persip.

| | Julian Cannonball Adderley CD (1956) Remastered; Digipak
Asia Minor CD music
$9.89 Julian "Cannonball" Adderley debuted into the jazz world with this album with help from Quincy Jones, who assembled the band, lent arrangements, and composed many of the selections. It's clear from the outset that Adderley's main influences were Benny Carter and Charlie Parker, and he was able to synthesize both icons into a sound that was seamless and tasteful. This little big band of all stars included brother Nat Adderley on cornet, and underwent slight personnel changes over three separate recording sessions in the late summer of 1955. Adderley could hardly go wrong working with heavyweights like J.J. Johnson, Cecil Payne, Jerome Richardson, Jimmy Cleveland, Paul Chambers, pianist John Williams, and either Max Roach or Kenny Clarke ...
| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Asia Minor music CDs
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of ...
| | Andrew Hill Passing Ships CD (1969) Remastered
Asia Minor songs
$11.39 This larger group session was recorded for Blue Note in 1969 but had to wait until 2003 to see the light of day. It was worth the wait, since PASSING SHIPS is one of composer-pianist Andrew Hill's most varied and distinctive efforts. Actually, the group here isn't all that big when you check the lineup, but Hill's skillful writing makes it sound as if we're listening to a more spacious ensemble. In addition, he makes most effective use of reedman Joe Farrell's multi-instrumental talents here. Not only does Farrell excel in the usual tenor and soprano saxophone roles but it's his English horn that sings the plaintive theme on the title track and his dusky alto flute that establishes ...
| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Asia Minor album
$11.19 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was quickly deleted. When it was reissued on CD in the 1990s, it was only in print for a short time as well. ...
| | Ornette Coleman Ornette! CD (1961) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Asia Minor CD music
$9.09 Originally issued in 1961 on Atlantic Records, ORNETTE! (recorded shortly after the revolutionary FREE JAZZ album) finds Ornette Coleman and company at the peak of their powers. Trumpeter Don Cherry and drummer Ed Blackwell are on board--both would continue playing with Coleman off and on for decades to come--but the wild card here is the legendary bassist Scott LaFaro, who earned his reputation with the equally innovative (albeit quieter) Bill Evans Trio, here taking the place of Coleman's then-regular bassist Charlie Haden. LaFaro's style is more hard-driving (in the traditional, hard-bop sense) than Haden's warm, buoyant approach, inspiring the soloists to feverish heights. Though considered very "avant-garde" at the time, Coleman's solos crackle with ...
