This formerly obscure quartet set by tenor-saxophonist Johnny Griffin (reissued on CD in the OJC series) features the fiery soloist on five little-known originals written by Chicagoans plus a burning version of "Cherokee." Virtually all of Griffin's recordings are worth getting and, with the assistance of pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Philly Joe Jones, the tenor is in superior form for this spirited date. ~ Scott Yanow

Way Out! album
$8.75 Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1995, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (extended resolution compact disc).
This double LP, which includes highlights from four of tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin's Riverside sets, has been largely superseded by the CD revolution. Three of the four albums (Johnny Griffin Sextet, Way Out, and The Little Giant, but not The Kerry Dancers) have since been reissued in full on CD. This was a fine sampler for the period, featuring Griffin in trios and quintets with the likes of trumpeters Donald Byrd and Blue Mitchell, trombonist Julian Priester, baritonist Pepper Adams, and pianists Kenny Drew, Wynton Kelly and Barry Harris, but get the complete CDs instead. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD reissue is a bit offbeat, for the set by tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin features three originals by then-obscure pianist Norman Simmons, a reworking of the pop tune "Playmates," Babs Gonzalez's "Lonely One" and the tenor's "63rd Street Theme." Simmons' arrangements ...

Way Out! music CDs
$8.75 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Johnny Griffin was rightfully known for his speed and dexterity on the tenor sax, and his work on this 1958 sextet session is no exception. Griffin's full-bodied, bluesy tone and vigorous, lightning-fingered lines scintillate on each of the five tracks here. What makes this Riverside date particularly notable, however, is the instrumentation and quality of the personnel. The rhythm section of piano (Kenny Drew), bass (Wilbur Ware), and drums (Philly Joe Jones) is fronted by Griffin, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Pepper Adams on baritone sax.
The triple-horn lineup gives the ensemble a heavy, solid sound that gestures toward big band on the more swinging cuts, while providing beautiful contrast and texture on down-tempo numbers. Among the program's highlights are a Griffin original ("Catharsis"), a brisk take on Dizzy ...
| | Johnny Griffin Lookin' At Monk CD (1961)
Way Out! songs
$9.69 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Originally recorded in 1961, this tribute program features two of the best tenor saxophonists of the period along with pianist Junior Mance and a rhythm section composed of bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley (both of whom would later work as Thelonious Monk sidemen). If the program seems a bit obvious ("'Round Midnight," "Epistrophy," "Well, You Needn't," etc.), bear in mind that this was only the second all-Monk program anyone had recorded and several of these numbers had yet to attain standard status. The playing is uniformly inventive and witty (both required attributes when approaching this repertoire), and Mance is particularly to be commended for maintaining a graceful and elegant attack and not trying to praise Monk by imitation. If there's a complaint to be made here, it's with the tempos, which sometimes verge on the headlong. ...
| | Johnny Griffin Tough Tenors CD (1960)
Way Out! album
$9.89 If one feels their music getting a bit stale, perhaps a little too predictable, then they have a couple choices. They can dig back into their roots to reconnect with the music they love, or they can go head to head with a counterpoint in an effort to create sparks. Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis choose the latter course in Tough Tenors, turning a half-dozen pieces into an enticing mix of edgy solos and synchronized ensemble playing. The fun stuff here bops along at a giddy pace, letting Griffin and Davis trade their tough leads, while pianist Junior Mance offers a slight pause with his swift keyboarding. Lester Young's "Tickle Toe" kicks off the affair with aplomb, and Davis/Griffin's "Twins" provides plenty of room for explosive solo work. The album's center rests with the nine-minute take on Bennie Green's "Flunky Flute," a spontaneous piece that eventually -- because of the players' intensity -- becomes an endurance test. The medium tempo of "Soft Winds" qualifies as a ballad for these guys, and the mellow groove makes it an easygoing closer. Bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley also do a fine job of keeping ...
