King Curtis, R&B's great tenor sax player, rides grooves like a cowboy does unruly steeds. Curtis blows ferociously but is always in control, unlike Junior Walker, whose sax seems to be cussing you out at times (which is Walker's charm). Accompanied by several noted jazz artists -- Jack McDuff (organ), Eric Gale (guitar), Willie Rodriguez (bongos, conga), and Ray Lucas (drums) -- Curtis serenades and balms on "Harlem Nocturne," bops-u-silly on "Honky Tonk," and boogies on "The Hucklebuck" and "(Let's Do) The Hully Gully Twist." But those are only a small part of the 22 tracks, all of which emphasize Curtis' patented groove and powerful exhortations. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder keeps the sound squeaky clean and the levels balanced. Excellent party or card game music. ~ Andrew Hamilton

This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set ...
| | Little Feat Kickin' It At The Barn CD (2003)
Night Train songs
$13.59 Kickin' It at the Barn is Little Feat's first album for their own indie label, Hot Tomato Records, which makes more of a difference than you might think. In his liner notes for the album, guitarist/vocalist Paul Barrére said they called the album Kickin' It at the Barn because it captures the band laying back and relaxing while recording at bandmember Fred Tackett's home studio, the Barn, and that's exactly what the ...
| | American Flyer/Spirit Of A Women CD (2004)
Night Train album
$13.59 Originally released on United Artists. Includes liner notes by Richie Unterberger.
American Flyer has long been a favorite of singer/songwriter, L.A. country-rock, and '70s soft rock aficionados, partially because of the group's supergroup status, but chiefly because the music they made was very, very good. That pedigree was indeed impressive, with the four members consisting of former Pure Prairie League member Craig Fuller, ...
| | Digable Planets Blowout Comb CD (1994)
Night Train CD music
$11.69 Digable Planets was one of the first rap acts to introduce rap's jazzier side to mainstream America. Now they're back to show their roots with BLOWOUT COMB.
The band that was "hip like that" and "grooved like that" while fronting a live jazz band on their debut embraces their afrocentric roots and Brooklyn heritage throughout the grooves on BLOWOUT COMB. Digable Planets' nucleus of rappers Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug have relaxed their style to sound less slick, but it works and the feel is noticeably more comfortable.
Possibly it's Digable Planets' love for their home Brooklyn that makes BLOWOUT COMB so immediately familiar and accessible. Proving that neighborhood ...
