| | Albert King In Session CD Albert King Discography of CDs
Originally recorded for Canadian television. The two blues g uitar legends jam on 'Stormy Monday', 'Don't lie To Me' and 'Pride and Joy'. 1999 release. Standard jewelcase.
Personnel: Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Tony Llorens (piano, organ); Gus Thornton (bass); Michael Llorens (drums). Recorded at CHCH studios, Hamilton, Ontario on December 6, 1983. Recorded in December 1983, IN SESSION captures an in-concert jam between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the latter of whom had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood, as well as his work on David Bowie's hit Let's Dance. Vaughan may have been the new news at the time, but King was not suffering either--he had a world-class supporting band and was playing as well as he ever had. In other words, the stage was set for a fiery, exciting concert and that's exactly what they delivered. Vaughan was clearly influenced by King--there are King licks all over his first two recorded efforts, and it was an influence that stayed with him to the end--and he was unafraid to go toe-to-toe with his idol. King must have been impressed, since IN SESSION never devolves into a mere cutting contest. Instead, each musician spurs the other to greater heights. For aficionados of either guitarist, that means the album isn't just worth a listen -- it means that it's a record that sounds as exciting on each subsequent listen as does the first time through. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque ...

In Session
$15.65 Personnel: Allen Toussaint (vocals, piano); Marc Ribot (acoustic guitar); Don Byron (clarinet); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Brad Mehldau (piano); David Piltch (upright bass); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Kevin Killen. Liner Note Author: Joe Henry. Recording information: 03/19/2008-03/22/2008. Photographer: Michael "Mick" Wilson. Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical experiences, but often focuses on his incredibly soulful piano playing. Even when other instruments take the lead (the trumpet on "A Dear Old Southland," the clarinet ...

While its predecessor, 2005's HOPE AND DESIRE, found blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi getting on a soul train, BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her ...

In Session
$12.75 Personnel: Tino Gross (vocals); Mike Smith (guitar); Johnny Evans (harp, saxophone); Jimmie Bones (keyboards); Shannon Boone, Johnny Badanjek (drums). Audio Mixers: Tino Gross; The Howling Diablos. Recording information: Funky D Studio; white Room Studios, Detroit, MI. With a raging inner fire befitting its name and is bleak, adrift-in-America stories straight out of the songbooks of Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash, the Howling Diablos deal out a fierce brand of grit-rock-infused blues. On 2005's CAR WASH, its first studio album in nearly a decade, the Detroit band betrays no hints of rust from the opening chords of the fearsome Bo Diddley-esque title track forward. The remainder of the record leans towards bar rockers, but it's the folk-laced tracks such as the angrily forlorn "Broke Down" and the Springsteen-styled "Mean Little Town" where the band truly shines. Detroit's contribution to rock & roll has long since been its own distinct thread, holding the closest relationship to blues and soul roots more than just about anywhere else. The Howling Diablos fall full square in this lineage, both on their own and as a backing band, and on Car Wash they ...

$13.15 This is the debut recording by the Milwaukee-based Celtic rock band Reilly. Almost without fail, Celtic rock bands with an alternative edge will either rightly or wrongly be compared with the Pogues. It's an easy name-drop used by critics who otherwise have limited knowledge of the vast expanse of modern Irish music. Influences notwithstanding, Reilly has more in common with post-Pogues Celtic rock. For ...
