What It Is music CDs
$13.89 SHAKE HANDS WITH SHORTY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Luther and Cody Dickinson, guitarist and drummer respectively for the hotter-than-Hades electric blues boogie trio the North Mississippi All Stars, have a tough rock & roll bloodline to live up to. Their father Jim is among the grandest and most multi-faceted figures to emerge from the Memphis music scene in the last 40 years, playing piano and producing records for a vast cross-section of legends, superstars and the historically notorious. The All Stars' sparkling debut, SHAKE HANDS WITH SHORTY, delivers hip swaying, juke joint blues boogie with teeth and bite.
Luther Dickinson's fingerpicking and bottleneck slide are the star attractions at these proceedings. While Cody and bassist Chris Chew lock down the simmering bottom, Luther slips and slides over the groove, glowing with exultant dancing lines that quote Duane Allman on "Po Black Maddie," and reeling and rocking like a freight train on "Goin' Down South." The syncopation points ...

| | Bobbe Norris Out Of Nowhere CD (1999)
What It Is album
$12.89 San Francisco based singer Norris has recorded scant few musical documents of her deep, full, rich voice, and for this date it is displayed articulately and with a broad range of feeling, and is enhanced by her back-up musicians, particularly pianist/arranger/husband Larry Dunlap. The 14 tracks represent American pop and jazz standards, Brazilian love songs, an occasional bop zing, and tasty insertions by trombonist Jeff Cressman, multi-woodwindist Noel Jewkes, bassist John Wiitala, and drummer Eddie Marshall. Norris shines on ballads where she is accompanied by one other player. The disc starts with the outstanding "My Old Flame" with Dunlap's tranquil piano, and ends on the same note during "This Life We've Led." Piano-bass-drums tracks like the title cut and "You Say You Care" are fairly typical. In a developmental fashion "How Deep Is the Ocean?" starts with piano and vocal, adds bass, then Jewkes' bass clarinet solo in an easy samba beat, while Jewkes on alto sax with Cressman's trombone go into modalities, then a swinging bridge with counterpointed horns, and a smidgen of Norris scatting underscores "It's You Or No One." Norris sings two duets, including one with hubby on his cute tune "I'd Rather Be Here." Then there's a stunning duet with Mark Murphy on "Invitation." ...

| | My Ruin Horror Of Beauty CD (2003)
What It Is music CDs
$9.39 While My Ruin has lost none of the rage wrapped up in 2001's Prayer Under Pressure of Violent Anguish, it has benefited from the addition of full-time drummer Yael. Horror of Beauty (the band's first full-length for Century Media) is still dominated by Tarrie B.'s voice and ideology. But Mick Murphy's road case full of riffs finally have a cohesive rhythm section to play off of. Murphy, Yael, and bassist Meghan Mattox don't simply build a platform for Tarrie to tear new assholes from -- they're four hungry heads in a quartet hardened through cohesion, and they're all gunning for you. Beauty cuts L.A. Whiskey-style hard rock with elements of thrash and sludgy goth. It's not a new sound by any means, but when done this well it'll give a nun a new habit. Tarrie takes Tinseltown to task (the churning "Ten Minutes to Hollywood"), and curses the unclear channels of restrictive radio programming in the subversive ripper "Radio Silence," but it's body type and self-image ...

$10.25 ARTIST BIOGRAPHYPHYRST BORN'Listen, Hip Hop is not just music, it is a way of life and I live life to the fullest.'Hip Hop first found Jamal Lowery in 1984 on an elementary school playground; the setting where he encountered his first opponent in a face-to-face MC battle. This was a defining moment in the life of the Hip Hop artist who we now know as Phyrst Born. A bond and a deep love for the art of Hip Hop were rooted within Phyrst. A bond, in which over the years, has only grown stronger. In his early years, Phyrst did not write any of his rhymes. He free styled every word and verse created in the ...
