The Staples' first album produced by Al Bell and recorded in Muscle Shoals hit the winning formula. Other changes saw Pervis Staples departing just before the album was recorded and being replaced by sister Yvonne Staples. Everything was now in place for the Staples' golden years. Three songs, "Heavy Makes You Happy," "Love Is Plentiful," and "You've Got to Earn It," all charted. ~ Rob Bowman

Staple Singers Staple Swingers Songs Staple Swingers Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Staple Singers' 3rd Stax album, with soulful swing... A fabulous album of the Staple Singers, Staple Swingers contains songs that have that have a slight swing touch to some of the songs. The songs I like on this title are "This is a Perfect World", "You've Got to Earn It", "You're Gonna Make Me Cry", "I'm a Lover", "Love is Plentiful", and "Heavy Makes You Happy." I also like "I Like the Things About Me". That is a great one, too. Submitted by Matt (Macomb, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Staple Swingers music CDs
$6.55 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming ...
| | Average White Band Soul Searching CD (1976)
Staple Swingers songs
$5.95 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

| | LMNO Leave My Name Out Leave My Name Out CD (2001)
Staple Swingers songs
$12.49 LMNO's first solo LP following his departure from the renowned Visionaries crew, Leave My Name Out is a dark recording relaying this California rapper's personal thoughts, theories, and social convictions as its chief artistic mission, spending most of its running time dealing with God, politics, and issues addressed with empty aggressiveness. With a flat musical foundation and LMNO's inability to make any of his faux-intellectual observations or rebelliousness sound convincing, this recording falls short of its hype, despite all-star guest appearances from Evidence (Dilated Peoples), J-Rocc of the Beatjunkies, and Kut Masta Kurt on the turntables. LMNO, guilty of being a self-described "thinkaholic who gets frolic without a wallet" on this output, never gets past second gear and leaves the record with few highlights. The Evidence-produced "Grin & Bear It" is the most dynamic moment, with LMNO's inspired vocal flow and the album's best groove barely keeping these 15 tracks afloat. Perhaps the first poor release from Battle Axe Records -- look for better outings from this talented MC and beat collective. ~ Nic Kincaid
