(2 Customer Reviews)
A fine mid-'70s album on which Isaac Hayes adapted to the disco era. His productions were already ideal for dance floors, and he now updated his charts to include some stomping segments with horns and layered beats, while maintaining his soulful vocals on both up-tempo tunes and ballads. This album got two Top 20 hits for Hayes and was his last really big hit album in the '70s. ~ Ron Wynn

Chocolate Chip
$9.65 ISSAC HAYES MOVEMENT is aptly named. It was here that Hayes reached his pinnacle as an arranger and producer, generating lengthy pieces that ebbed and crested into "movements" that were worlds removed from the taut, three-minute pop songs he helped write and craft for Stax/Volt studios in the 1960s. Ironically, none of the material on MOVEMENT ...
| | Isaac Hayes To Be Continued CD (1970)
Chocolate Chip
$8.65 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Released in late 1970 on the heels of two chart-topping albums, Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and The Isaac Hayes Movement (also 1970), Isaac Hayes and the Bar-Kays retain their successful approach on those landmark albums for To Be Continued, another number one album. Again, the album features four songs that span far beyond traditional radio-friendly length, featuring important mood-establishing instrumental segments just as emotive and striking as Hayes' crooning. Nothing here is quite as perfect as "Walk on By," and the album feels a bit churned out, but To Be Continued no doubt has its share of highlights, the most notable being "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." The album's most epic moment opens with light strings and horns, vamping poetically for several minutes before Hayes even utters a breath; then, once the singer ...
| | Isaac Hayes Joy CD (1973)
Chocolate Chip
$8.79 Digital remastering by Joe Tarantino (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
With seven massive number one records trailing in his wake, Isaac Hayes donned his stylin', funky gold-chain link vest once again and capped 1973 with Joy, a set which might have proven the lucky-streak breaker -- it missed the top spot by one place -- but still waded into gold-record waters with ease. "Joy" itself, of course, was the album's crowning glory, a gargantuan 15-minute piece which essentially devoured side one of the album (the accompanying "I Love You That's All" is merely an afterthought). Heady, smoky, ubiquitous -- an instrumental and vocal foray into the land of good grooves -- it was sexy and sassy, with strings and innuendo stripped bare and smoothly built to lead anyone within earshot toward ...
| | Isaac Hayes Wonderful CD (1994)
Chocolate Chip
$9.89 Recorded between 1970 & 1974. Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This odds-and-sods disc gathers nine cuts from a variety of non-LP sources -- including 7" 45 RPM-only releases and seasonal offerings, and kicks off with a quarter-hour-long reading of "Ain't No Sunshine," Isaac Hayes' contribution to the Wattstax (1973) Original Motion Picture soundtrack. As there are only a few vintage archival live recordings to feature Hayes' early-'70s work, every one is worthy of, at the very least, a cursory listen. The 112,000 gathered for Wattstax benefit can witness to the righteously funkified the Isaac Hayes Movementas the Black Moses of Soul headlined the day-long charity event. Prior to the release of his complete performance on the thoroughly excellent Isaac Hayes at Wattstax (2003), this show-stopping rendition ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) SDTK
Chocolate Chip
$8.89 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords ...
| | Isaac Hayes Groove-A-Thon CD (1976)
Chocolate Chip
$9.89 The title track employs "Shaft"-like guitar licks, but the similarity ends there: It's a lame attempt at disco done in by Ike's lazy singing and irritatingly banal lyrics. But it's the LP's only sore point. Ike returns to his roots on "Your Loving Is Much Too Strong," a slow, romantic ballad that he and his girls, Hot Buttered Soul Unlimited, make you ...

$21.59 ROAD TESTED was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Burning Down The House" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system.
ROAD TESTED is the first live album of Bonnie Raitt's storied career, and the two-disc set easily gets across the magic she makes at her concerts. Recorded in 1995, at six shows in Portland, Oregon and Oakland, California, Raitt digs deep into her catalog for clever interpretations of blues, soul and even classic new wave songs that have shaped her musical vocabulary. Constantly paying homage to her musical roots, Raitt brings on such idols as Charles and Ruth Brown, as well as contemporary VH-1 co-horts like Bruce Hornsby, Bryan Adams and Jackson Browne, to add to the fireworks. And even though the cameos of these formidable talents add up to some delightful thrills, Raitt's pure singing, biting slide guitar and crack back-up band are the main reasons why she passes this road test with flying colors.
