Like Rare Earth and early Funkadelic, Black Nasty took a very rock-minded approach to Detroit soul and funk -- probably too rock-minded for many program directors at black radio. And at the same time, Black Nasty was too funky and soul-oriented for FM rock radio. So Black Nasty fell through the cracks in the early to mid-'70s, although it enjoyed some commercial success after evolving into the ADC Band and recording the major funk hit of 1978, "Long Stroke." The band's only album as Black Nasty, Talking to the People, was a commercial disappointment but a creative triumph. Those who savored the Motor City funk/rock experiments of Rare Earth and early Funkadelic will find a lot to admire about gritty, hard-edged smokers like "Nasty Soul," "Getting Funky Round Here," and the single "Black Nasty Boogie" (which brings to mind John Lee Hooker's work with Canned Heat). To its credit, Black Nasty has no problem turning around and providing silky, mellow slow jams such as "Rushin' Sea" and "I Must Be in Love," both of which feature singer Audrey Matthews. It is Nasty's other lead singer, Terrance Ellis, who handles the more up-tempo gems. Originally a vinyl LP, Talking to the People was reissued on CD in 1999. ~ Alex Henderson

The songwriting and innovation barometer may not be as high on this LP as it is on early-'70s discs by Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, Miles Davis, and Santana -- all of whom Magnum bear slight to strong resemblance to, at one point or another. PLANTATION LULLABIES is a compelling socio-sexual-musical statement by an artist who is too much of a free bird to be defined by any one style. Me'Shell NdegeOcello is a throwback to an era of singers like Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln: hip, soulful divas with social consciences to match, tender enough to give some mother loving to the right partner, but too toughminded to be dependent on anyone. Very few artists could have carried off something quite as suave and sensual and proud as "Dred Loc" or concocted the sweet, hopeless mood of surrender that distinguishes "Outside Your Door," while also evoking the gritty urban realities of "Step Into The Projects" or dissing color-bland brothers on "Soul On Ice."
NdegeOcello is an urban troubadour, and her heady blend of contemporary hip hop, hard funk, groovy jazz and good old time soul is both a throwback to more open-minded times, and a vision of R&B to come. NdegeOcello is a gifted multi-instrumentalist/arranger, who played and/or charted out most of the music on PLANTATION LULLABIES. She's also a remarkably funky bassist, whose lithe, percussive phrasing gives every song a taut, percussive edge, and for nasty, nasty funk, and a catty in-your-face storyline, it doesn't get any skankier than "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)."

Pete Fountain has spent a lifetime playing and promoting Dixieland jazz, making it possible for people who otherwise have little awareness of it to cop a casual taste and enjoy the thrill of New Orleans polyphony. Fountain's Best of Dixieland series includes reissues of his own work and that of Al Hirt as well as a superb anthology of traditional jazz clarinetists. Fountain's Louis Armstrong volume focuses mainly on Armstrong's live recordings from the '40s and '50s, with the 1927 "Weary Blues" and a 1936 "Mahogany Hall Stomp" thrown in for historical ballast. This is a nice little introduction to Louis Armstrong. It features his trumpet, which is more than can be said for some compilations which fixate upon his twilight years as a beloved vocalist. This is a taste. This is only a taste. And there are hundreds more great Louis Armstrong performances where these came from. ~ arwulf arwulf

Culled from performances on their mammoth 1986 TURBO tour, Judas Priest's second live album, PRIEST...LIVE! was issued one year later. Including some post-BRITISH STEEL songs, PRIEST...LIVE! doesn't quite measure up to their outstanding earlier live album, 1979's UNLEASHED IN THE EAST, but it has its moments.
Unsurprisingly, plenty of selections from the TURBO album are featured, such as "Out in the Cold," "Turbo Lover," and "Parental Guidance," but "Hot Rockin'," "Don't Go," and several '80s Priest classics are noticeably absent. Still, you can't go wrong with inspired versions of such favorites as "Love Bites," "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll," "Electric Eye," "Living After Midnight," and "You've Got Another Thing Coming."
