this reissue of GHB*201*LP is a beautifully recorded ensemble w. Bob & Glen Sottola on trumpets, trombonist Tom Artin, pianist Mark Shane, banjo man Chris Flory, bassist Phil Flanagan & drummer Chuck Riggs
King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band was the top group on records in 1923 and it introduced not only the cornetist-leader but Louis Armstrong and clarinetist Johnny Dodds. In 1981 Bob Wilber sought to recreate the spirit and arrangements of the original band. Utilizing an octet with both Bob and Glenn Zottola on trumpets and trombonist Tom Artin, Wilber recorded 15 selections; Oliver cut 13 in 1923, "Wa Wa Wa" dates from slightly later and Wilber's "Lincoln Gardens Stomp" is in the style of the Creole Jazz Band. The ensembles (transcribed by Wilber and Mark Tucker) are pretty much note-for-note from the early records although the soloists were free to depart in subtle ways. This is an interesting release that allows today's listeners to hear just how intricate the ensembles of King Oliver's band were back in the early 1920's. Although Wilber mentions in the liner notes that this was the first of three albums in the project, it is actually the only one to ever come out. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Bob Wilber (clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone).

| | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Kirkatron/Boogie Woogie String Along For Real CDs (2005)
Music Of King Oliver music CDs
$11.39 This issue combines two late-period Rahsaan Roland Kirk albums: Kirkatron, begun shortly before the major stroke that debilitated him and shortened his life, and Boogie-Woogie String Along for Real, his first attempt at a comeback and his final recording. Kirkatron hosts three tunes recorded for it, and nine more that were outtakes from the preceding 5000 Lb. Man sessions, and a few from the Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival concert. As such it does contain a number of tunes that define the man at the height of his powers including a cover of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade," the live "Serenade to a Cuckoo," and a fine "Bright Moments." His bandmates on the date include a young Hilton Ruiz on piano and Steve Turre. Boogie-Woogie String Along for Real does stand in contrast to Kirkatron. The intensity and intention is there, but it's more subtle, informed no doubt by the fact that Kirk had taught himself to play with only his left hand because his right ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Music Of King Oliver songs
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting "'Til Then" and the innocent, childlike theme of "My Joy," which is reminiscent of "Little B's Poem" (save for its multi-sectioned structure). Meanwhile, ...

Music Of King Oliver album
$15.29 Sensual is Paraguayan harpist Roberto Perera's sixth album for Telarc's smooth jazz subsidiary, Heads Up. Perera continues his way down an absorbing melody lane with a program of songs played in a manner that will offend no one and will not require very much concentration by the listener to enjoy what's being presented. One track seems to merge into another without much rhythmic or musical distinction. They all seem to be variations on a gentle, Latin-tempo theme. This stream-of-consciousness approach is broken up now and then, such as by the vocals of Luis Enrique and Tommy Anthony on the pop-oriented "Gracias a la Vida" and "Sensual," respectively. Perera is responsible for writing seven of the 12 ...
