The ragtime era was an exciting time when previously unheard of privileges and pleasures were exercised, like dancing in public cheek to cheek. This CD captures the music that provided the vehicle for romantic interludes and exuberant celebrations of life. Produced by Nina Buck, proprietress of the renowned Palm Court Jazz Club in New Orleans, the CD features some of the best-known and loved musical artists who perform regularly at her French Quarter traditional jazz mecca. Originally released as an LP on the Vanguard label, the CD was remastered and reissued in 1994. With eyes closed, though, the listener will be transported back to those days of ragtime music, along with stirring marches, joyous cakewalks, sultry blues, and elegant waltzes. The New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra are led by Lars Edegran, who founded the organization in 1967. The all-star cast of musicians includes Pud Brown, Walter Payton, Lionel Ferbos, Orange Kellin, Paul Crawford, and John Robicheaux. There are plenty of rags to justify the orchestra's title, including "Temptation Rag," "Powder Rag," and "Dusty Rag." The trumpet of Lionel Ferbos sounds especially fine on tunes like "Pretty Doll" and "Sweetie Dear," as well as "Come Back to Me Mandy." The band swings on classics including "Tishomingo Blues," "Eugenia," and "Dill Pickles." With music this much fun, no wonder people in those days came out on their lunch hours to dance and returned again to dance the night away. ~ Rose of Sharon Witmer

New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra music CDs
$11.39 This issue combines two late-period Rahsaan Roland Kirk albums: Kirkatron, begun shortly before the major stroke that debilitated him and shortened his life, and Boogie-Woogie String Along for Real, his first attempt at a comeback and his final recording. Kirkatron hosts three tunes recorded for it, and nine more that were outtakes from the preceding 5000 Lb. Man sessions, and a few from the Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival concert. As such it does contain a number of tunes that define the man at the height of his powers including a cover of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade," the live "Serenade to a Cuckoo," and a fine "Bright Moments." His bandmates on ...

| | Ornette Coleman This Is Our Music CD (1961) (Import) United Kingdom
New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra album
$13.15 Recorded in New York, New York in 1961. Originally released on Atlantic. Includes liner notes by Ornette Coleman.
This landmark 1960 album from the Ornette Colemen Quartet, continued to hint at the dimension to which Coleman was headed. THIS IS OUR MUSIC featured a line-up of Coleman on sax, Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums.
With two landmark albums already under its belt, the Ornette Coleman Quartet spent nearly a year out of the studio before reconvening for This Is Our Music. This time, Billy Higgins is replaced on drums by Ed Blackwell, who has a similar knack for anticipating the ensemble's direction, and proves a more fiery presence on tracks like "Kaleidoscope" and "Folk Tale." The session is also notable for containing the only standard (or, for that matter, the only non-original) Coleman recorded during his tenure with Atlantic -- Gershwin's "Embraceable You," which is given a lyrical interpretation and even a rather old-time, sentimental intro (which may or may not be sarcastic, but really is pretty). In general, though, Coleman disapproved of giving up his own voice and viewed standards as concessions to popular taste; as the unapologetic title of the album makes clear, he wanted to be taken (or left) on his own terms. And that word "our" also makes clear just how important the concept of group improvisation was to Coleman's goals. Anyone can improvise ...

His artistic outings include these under guise of Molr Drammaz and retro*sex*galaxy as well as collaborations with Felix Kubin and Paul Wirkus. With The Complainer project Wojtek turned his attention to pop music. First release titled 'sponsored by retro*sex*galaxy' found much applause in international media. WIRE even wrote that The Complainer is 'here to show the sneery kitschophiliacs how retro should be done". After the 2007 release "The Complainer & The Complainers", the project turned into a full band, complete with visuals. Kucharczyk was joined by his sister Asia Bronislawska aka Asi Mina (vocals, acoustic guitar), Pawel Trzcinski (synth, percussion) ...
