| | Capt John Handy Very Handy! CD Capt John Handy Discography of CDs
New Orleans altoist Captain John Handy was quite busy during March-May 1966, recording over five albums' worth of material and touring on the East Coast. This 1993 CD brings back one of the rarest of all the dates that trombonist Big Bill Bissonette recorded in the 1960s. Handy is teamed mostly with players from Bissonette's Easy Riders band of young revivalists: clarinetist Sammy Rimington, trumpeter Clive Wilson, banjoist Dick Griffith, pianist Dick Sinclair, bassist Mouldy Dick McCarthy, drummer Art Pulver and Bissonette. In addition to the original seven numbers (which put the focus on Handy's playing), five previously unissued cuts have been added, including a blazing version of "Running Wild." Other highlights include "Give Me Your Telephone Number," "Golden Leaf Strut" (which is really another name for "Milenberg Joys"), and an almost out-of-control "Mahogany Hall Stomp." Handy and Remington work off each other quite well, and there are many heated moments on this exciting set. ~ Scott Yanow

Very Handy! music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a ...

| | Stanley Turrentine Never Let Me Go CD (1963) Bonus Tracks; Japan; Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Very Handy! music CDs
$33.75 Joined here by organist and longtime foil Shirley Scott, Mr. T gets down and funky over such standards as "God Bless The Child" and "Without A Song," as well as originals like "Major's Minor" and "Sara's Dance." Also features some fine work by drummer Al Harewood.
This 1961 groove date by Stanley Turrentine is an example of him at his fiery peak. Far from the slow groover of the CTI years, Turrentine's early Blue Note sides were massive and bright, saturated in deep soul and blues. This set featured Turrentine's wife, organist and composer Shirley Scott, ...
