| | Dizzy Gillespie Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949 CDs (1995)
King Jazz Vol 1 Masters KJ & KJ 3 CD music
$16.09 Digitally remastered by James Nichols (BMG Studios, New York).
THE COMPLETE RCA VICTOR RECORDINGS gathers under one roof all the seminal big-band recordings and small-group sessions Dizzy cut for the label during his great initial burst of creativity following World War II. Some rare Gillespie performances act as historical bookends to this set. There's his early work as a sideman with Teddy Hill and Lionel Hampton, when he was still under the sway of Roy Eldridge. And for the last word, there is the legendary 1949 Metronome All-Star date, featuring Charlie Parker and some of Dizzy's chief acolytes. Trumpeters Fats Navarro and Miles Davis pay tribute to Dizzy's stylistic dominance by engaging the master in an astonishing round-robin dialogue on the ...
| | Kate Campbell Visions Of Plenty CD (1998)
King Jazz Vol 1 Masters KJ & KJ 3 music CDs
$14.49 While Kate Campbell's previous records evoked the tough realities and poetic epiphanies of contemporary southern life with uncommon accuracy, on Visions of Plenty she steps back to recall her own coming of age during the civil rights movement. Although themes of race and religion wind through the album's 11 songs, Campbell ...

| | Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played CD (2005)
King Jazz Vol 1 Masters KJ & KJ 3 CD music
$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows Paul to shine in an instrumental setting, as on the slinky rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" ...
| | Maxjazz Holiday CD (2001)
King Jazz Vol 1 Masters KJ & KJ 3 music CDs
$14.35 Max Jazz Holiday is a collection of Christmas songs primarily featuring the vocalists from the label's roster. Rene Marie's sensual take of "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" and warmly swinging "Winter Wonderland" immediately stand out (supported by the terrific accompaniment of pianist Mulgrew Miller's trio), as do the bright performances by LaVerne Butler of an upbeat "Sleigh Ride" and a lovely version of "The Christmas Song." Veteran singer Mary Stallings still has lots to offer with her relaxed "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and a sassy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Philip Manuel, the only male voice on the CD, is slightly reminiscent of Johnny Mathis on his two tracks. Christine Hitt opts for less familiar fare with "We'll Dress This House" and accompanying herself on piano on the tedious "Some Children See Him"; far more interesting is the jaunty take of the old reliable "Santa ...

| | Hammers Of Misfortune August Engine CD (2003)
King Jazz Vol 1 Masters KJ & KJ 3 album
$7.55 Hammers of Misfortune's first effort, 2000's The Bastard, was a concept album as bold in its strangeness as it was impeccable in its execution, so much so that even when the music didn't always stand up under scrutiny, one was still guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained by the overall end result. Such is also oddly the case -- after reversing the success rates of music and words -- with its 2001 follow-up, The August Engine, whose stunning black and silver artwork scheme alone leads to heightened expectations, which its actual contents can only partly satisfy. A clear-cut case of two halves, the first is inaugurated in pounding metal fashion by an instrumental overture positively teeming with incredible riffs and unexpected twists; segues into a gentle amalgam of acoustic guitar, stark piano, and the crystalline ...
