| | Rakotozafy Valiha Malaza CD - Import Rakotozafy Discography of CDs
The tube-zither valiha is one of the pinnacles of Malagasy music, typical in its mix of Southeast Asian and African ingredients. This re-release of the '60s recordings of the instrument's best-known master is much the best of Globestyle's Malagasy issues, and a worthy substitute for the vanished Ocora valiha album (which also, incidentally, included cuts by Rakotozafy). ~ John Storm Roberts

| | Pink Martini Sympathique CD (1997)
Valiha Malaza music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.
Pink Martini: China Forbes, Thomas Lauderdale.
Personnel: China Forbes (vocals); Dan Faehnle (guitar); Aaron Meyer (violin); David Eby (cello); Gavin Bondy (trumpet); Robert Taylor (trombone); Thomas Lauderdale (piano); Doug Smith (vibraphone, percussion); Richard Rothfus (drums, bongos, percussion); Brian Davis (congas, timbales, ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Valiha Malaza CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some ...
