...who are in fact The Victoria Kings, a band of two lead guitars and three rhythm guitars! Whether it is or not, benga sounds like Kenyan soukous - less slick than Zairean music, more rough and ready. It is very much like the early Zaiko Langa Langa in exuberance and drive, but again, a little more real than the latest soukous (let's hope that Paris doesn't discover benga anytime soon!) It's mostly love songs; it's hard to imagine any of them are sad - the music is so happy with its guitar-with-two-backs sound. There's no drum machines, either! ~ Carl Hoyt

Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel is a 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer based in Tel Aviv. When a friend introduced him to the sounds of 1960s funk and Afro-beat, he was immediately entranced, and this album was the eventual result. It shows clearly that he's been listening hard to the records of his heroes -- Fela Kuti, James Brown, Sly Stone -- and that he's learned a lot from them. It also shows his impressive instrumental chops. What the album lacks is a critical mass of interesting songs, or even grooves that are substantial enough to sustain a full song's length. Long-Awaited Sowders CD to be ReleasedThe wait is over for fans of the Hawaiian slack-key artist Ray Sowders. His latest release, entitled Ho'omalie, (to calm, hush or soothe), will be released in January 2005. With 13 tracks, fans will not be disappointed as Ray packs even more of his unique guitar style than his critically-acclaimed debut CD Kukuna Mehana. Ray again joins forces with Shawn Ishimoto, giving Shawn an even bigger role in the CD. In a departure of the ordinary, there are surprise uses of harp, grand piano, and strings, expanding on Ray's musical production and audio engineering. This recording is filled with sheer emotion as it re-explores the bond between slack key and hula - the two most traditional styles of Hawaiian music. Ukulele, steel guitar and hula implements are frequently included throughout the recording, creating a dancer's feel. One can almost imagine the movement of a hula dancer while listening.In the hula selections the slack key flows freely along with the ukulele and steel guitar returning to the original way they were integrated.
