This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.
As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC'są," "Buck Em Down," (a perfect example of Black Moon's fondness for choosing jazzy loops as the foundations for epic tales of criminal adventurism, a style perfected on "Shit iz Real") and the contagious "I Got Cha Opin." Buckshot and 5T's delivery styles are somewhat monotonous compared to rappers who came after them and might best be described as "blunted," but Evil Dee's production style will remain as much a benchmark of NY beat-making as Beats By the Pound's will of Southern playa rap.

Vibe (11/93, p.112) - "...ENTA DA STAGE [has] undiluted street stories, delivered with such intensity that they almost sound confessional...Black Moon is definitely work-in-progress, though..." The Source (11/93, p.75) - 4 Stars - Slammin' - "...Black Moon's ENTA DA STAGE is a welcome return to the days when rap consistently reflected true musical and lyrical integrity....Make this jammie a priority..." Enta Da Stage album
$8.49 Samples include "Mingus Fingus No. 2" (as performed by Charles Mingus), "Rain Dance" (as performed by Herbie Hancock), "Melody For Thelma" (as performed by Blue Mitchell) and "Who Sey Me Dun" (as performed by Cutty Ranks).
After earning both BET video play and underground cred (reaching beyond the rap community) for their 1993 debut with clever and twisted rhymes delivered with unique cadence, the duo of Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po returned two years later with another classic late golden age of hip-hop record. About the only change-up on STRESS: THE EXTINCTION is hinted at in the title; there is a stronger sense ...
| | Smif-N-Wessun Dah Shinin' CD (1995)
Enta Da Stage CD music
$12.79 Smif-N-Wessun gained instant recognition due to their first single "Bucktown," which flourished as an anthem for all of Brooklyn's underground heads. But the initial hype never died down because the DJs soon pounced on the B-side, "Let's Git It On," and raised it to street-hit status as well. The group's full-length debut, DAH SHININ', keeps their streak of successes alive on the strength of Tek's rude boy-accented flow and Steele's low-rocking rag image, and maintains the duos street-rep as "original gun clappers."
Produced by Da Beatminerz (including Black Moon's DJ EvilDee), DAH SHININ' opens with a mean bass line, some wicked scratches and ...
| | Diamond & The Psychotic Neurotics Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop CD (1992)
Enta Da Stage music CDs
$8.09 Diamond D had quietly provided some exciting production work and made strides within the rap music industry and community throughout the early '90s, but his name didn't become immediately recognizable until his classic guest appearance rapping on A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" ("Take it from Diamond/It's like mountain climbing/When it comes to rhyming/You gotta put your time in"), off their masterful second album, The Low End Theory. Even amid vintage verses by such lauded hip-hop company as Tribe's Q-Tip and Phife and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar and Sadat X, something about Diamond D's forthright and rock-solid, but totally laid-back, style stood out. Hip-hop heads waiting to hear more from him were rewarded with a veritable wealth of treasures when Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop, Diamond D's debut album, was released the following year. The album instantly became -- and remains -- something of an underground masterpiece. Stunts is a hugely sprawling, amorphous thing. Nearly 70 minutes would generally seem far too long for a hip-hop album to sustain any degree of good taste, especially one that is ...
| | Heltah Skeltah Nocturnal CD (1996)
Enta Da Stage songs
$11.69 Principally recorded at Dolla Cab Lab, Brooklyn, New York; Chung King Studios, Unique Studios and D&D Studios, New York, New York.
Samples include "The Look Of Love" (as performed by Jonny Pate & Orchestra), "Danube" (as performed by Lalo Schifrin), "Blame It On My Youth" and "I Cover The Water Front (I See The Horizon)" (as performed by Gloria Lynne).
Heltah Skeltah is the third act to emerge from under the wings of Brooklyn's Boot Camp Clique, following Black Moon and Smif-N-Wessun. The two rappers in Heltah Skeltah sport a similar underground style to their mentors in Black Moon, with basic production and off-the-top-of-the-head rhymes. The production here is darker, but maintains a funky appeal.
NOCTURNAL is a true lyrical album. It focuses primarily on the the duo's nearly-unmatchable microphone skills. Rock and Ruck spit rhymes back and forth, almost non-stop, as if they could go on for days. Their combination of hip-hop realism and head-nodding beats makes this a solid debut.
Heltah Skeltah is comprised of MCs Ruck and Rock, two members of the loose-knit East Coast congregation Boot Camp Clik. The duo's debut establishes the crew as one of the most powerful members of the ...
| | Jeru The Damaja Sun Rises In The East CD (1994)
Enta Da Stage album
$9.79 As the title indicates, THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST is one of a handful of albums (also including Nas' ILLMATIC, Mobb Deep's INFAMOUS, and Black Moon's ENTA DA STAGE) that put the East Coast back on the hiphop map. West Coasters Dr. Dre and Snoop had stolen the spotlight with THE CHRONIC back in the summer of 1992. Jeru helped to usher in a ...
| | Black Moon Diggin' In Dah Vaults CD (1996)
Enta Da Stage CD music
$13.29 DIGGIN' IN DAH VAULTS features remixed tracks from Black Moon's 1993 album ENTA DA STAGE along with 2 previously-unreleased tracks.
Additional personnel includes: Tek & Steele, Havoc (background vocals).
With its first single, "Who Got the Props," Black Moon earned instant underground status. The cut eventually led to the equally outstanding Enta da Stage, which continued to mine the hazed-out jazzy vibe of "Props" as well as its street-savvy, quintessentially New York vocal style. It took longer than expected, however, for that album to appear. During the recording process, the trio produced a wealth of material that didn't make the album's final cut, and in the wake of the critical praise lavished on the debut as well as the fan demand created by it, Nervous Records decided to round up some of those unreleased tracks and couple them with remixes and previously uncollected single sides for the compilation Diggin' in dah Vaults. It is understandably not as consistent in sound as the group's debut, but Black Moon managed to turn that into an attribute. Specifically, the group split the album almost right down the middle ...
| | Who Is Jill Scott?: Words And Sounds, Vol. 1 CD (2000)
Enta Da Stage music CDs
$11.05 WHO IS JILL SCOTT? WORDS AND SOUNDS VOL. 1 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, Jill Scott was nominated for Best New Artist and "Gettin' In The Way" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
"A Long Walk" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Jill Scott first turned a multitude of heads by penning the brilliant hip-hop love jam "You Got Me," which with the aid of Erykah Badu became a huge hit for fellow Philly-ites The Roots. On The Roots' subsequent live album COME ALIVE, Scott's onstage performance swiftly dispelled any notion that her vocation as a songwriter was due to a lack of vocal skills. Scott is easily Ms. Badu's equal in sultry sensuality and subtle vocal acrobatics, and her lush, luxurious lyrics are almost on par ...
