(9 Customer Reviews)
Smif-N-Wessun gained instant recognition due to their first single "Bucktown," which flourished as an anthem for all of Brooklyn's underground heads. But the initial hype never died down because the DJs soon pounced on the B-side, "Let's Git It On," and raised it to street-hit status as well. The group's full-length debut, DAH SHININ', keeps their streak of successes alive on the strength of Tek's rude boy-accented flow and Steele's low-rocking rag image, and maintains the duos street-rep as "original gun clappers."
Produced by Da Beatminerz (including Black Moon's DJ EvilDee), DAH SHININ' opens with a mean bass line, some wicked scratches and hard-core drum beats; but the music is smoothly undercut by the laid-back flow of the lyrics for "Timz N Hood Chek." The consecutive cuts "Wrektime," "Wontime" and "Wrekonize" are unified by their sound, indicative of Brooklyn-based hip-hop circa 1994. Smif-N-Wessun's posse, the Bootcamp Clik, are represented on "Wipe Ya Mouf," which also name-drops the fake friends who've been stressing the band's new-found success a little too much. However, the band's environment and themes are best summed up on "Shinin...Next S**t," which describes their world as one where the inhabitants don't have any choice but to "pack a biscuit" (carry a gun), and where the future holds nothing but a life of crime.

After 11 years, I still listen to it like it's a new release (i've actually bought this cd 4 times). It's a shame music has changed so much that albums like this aren't made any more. fressssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh This album is sick to the bone. the production held by Da Beatminerz, delivering those heavy drums and just a raw and grimey, dusty sound. the lyrical content is rather lacking, there is a lot of thuggery going on but whatever it still contains ill wordplay... | | Black Moon Enta Da Stage CD (1993)
Dah Shinin'
$12.99 This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.
As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot ...
| | Das EFX Dead Serious CD (1992)
Dah Shinin'
$8.39 Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, which was considerable. But the album wasn't just appealing; it was also enormously influential, ushering in an entirely unique rhyming flow that influenced any number of rappers, established and novice alike. What exactly the duo is rapping about is anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: their lyrics are about as far removed from hardcore realism ...

| | Henry Group Robinett Uncommon Prayer & Other Short Stories CD (2000)
Dah Shinin'
$13.49 In the 1990s, many gifted improvisers allowed themselves to be neutered by NAC/smooth jazz radio, which usually favored the most formulaic and contrived recordings that pop-jazz and instrumental pop had to offer. If a jazz artist grew tired of struggling and was longing for financial security, it was tempting to sell out, give NAC programmers what they wanted and become as formulaic as possible. But there are other improvisers who realize that there is a middle ground between being totally uncommercial and becoming a complete sellout or a musical prostitute. Henry Robinett is neither of those things; balancing commercial and artistic considerations, the guitarist makes Uncommon ...
