| | Richie Zellon Metal Caribe CD Richie Zellon Discography of CDs
Zellon's 1998 outing finds him taking on both familiar and unfamiliar directions in jazz performance -- applying Latin twists and jazz notions to such pieces as an excerpt from Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," "The Twilight Zone" theme, and Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." Much of the time, the originals are the starting point for improvisation in time signatures not originally associated with those songs, but it is enough to make the performances interesting to hear. Zellon also lets loose briefly on the title track, though his guitar and cuatro work elsewhere tends to be more restrained, with a lot of solo time being handed over to other players on the disc. An enjoyable disc with a nice sense of humor. ~ Steven McDonald

$14.45 Smooth jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb expands his characteristically mellow sound to include funk, dance, and various other electronic rhythms on eBop. While not as exploratory or funky as one might have hoped, it does evince an organic creativity uncommon to most smooth jazz releases. | | More Perfect Harmony CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Metal Caribe album
$17.05 Like many compilations of this nature, there's the feeling that these two dozen sweet soul harmony rarities (five of them previously unreleased) were picked as much for their rarity as their quality. Most of the groups are male, and very few of them will be familiar to all but collector soul specialists, though the Insiders (represented by the 1966 Red Bird single "Chapel Bells Are Calling," produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller) evolved into the Main Ingredient. It's nothing to make you forget the great Philadelphia and Chicago soul groups of this sort, but the tracks are uniformly well produced and decently sung, though they're largely lacking in the kind of hooks needed to implant them in either the memory banks or radio play lists. "Never My Love" might be a kind of wimpy song, for instance, but when you hear the Magictones' version, it really does leap out as something catchier than its immediate surroundings on this CD. With the okay-but-unremarkable vibe so pervasive, you're left looking for oddities and points of interest, and there are a few. There couldn't have been many late-'60s soul songs that referenced baseball great Willie Mays and claimed he hung out "Under the Street Lamp" before reaching the major leagues, as Joe Bataan with Group did on their 1969 single of the same name. The Climates' "No You for Me," with a far more Southern (and specifically Memphis) ...

| | God Bless The Child: The Very Best Of Billie Holiday CD (2006)
Metal Caribe music CDs
$7.69 It's easy to call any collection "The Very Best Of" and mislead naïve listeners into believing the claim until they take the record home and give it a spin, and find it was compiled of dead dogs or substandard material licensed by some shoddy label to make a buck. Not so with this fine 14-cut collection by Sony/BMG Legacy, God Bless the Child: The Very Best of Billie Holiday, which certainly makes a convincing argument for the claim. While it begins with a 1941 performance of the title track, with Roy Eldridge, Jimmy Powell, Grachan Moncur, Eddie Heywood, and Herbert Cowans in the band, it goes backward to 1935 when she fronted the Teddy Wilson Orchestra for a historic session that yielded three classic performances, including "I Wished on the Moon." ...
