Racer X: Jeff Martin (vocals); John Alderete (bass guitar); Paul Gilbert, Harry Gschoesser. Personnel: Jeff Martin (vocals); Paul Gilbert (guitar); Harry Gschoesser (drums). Recording information: Prairie Sun Studios, Cotati, CA. Racer X's 1986 debut is essentially a showcase for then teenaged guitar prodigy Paul Gilbert. The opening instrumental, "Frenzy," pretty much lays the cards on the table; a mostly unaccompanied survey of Gilbert's jaw-dropping fretboard tricks, it summarizes Street Lethal's modus operandi right at the outset. Gilbert himself described Racer X as "heavy metal with scary guitars," and that's pretty much what you get -- skillfully executed, Judas Priest-style metal (with flag-waving songtitles like "Hotter Than Fire," "Loud and Clear," and "Rock It,") loaded with gobs of Gilbert's virtuosity. Vocalist Jeff Martin adds appropriately Rob Halford-esque howls to the proceedings, and the rhythm section do their part in maintaining the excitement. For fans of the "shred" guitar genre, this album has plenty to drool over. ~ Andy Hinds Racer X Street Lethal Songs Street Lethal Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews right time, right on just when many guitarists were competing to be the fastest in los angelas, then there came paul gilbert. i think this is truly the best racer x album, straight forward rock with amazing guitar playing. i remember listening to this in the 80s, and being a musician it blew me away and still does. i think the songs are catchy to. street lethal, loud and clear, yro and frenzy. there arent any fillers on this either. the best racer x by far. Great Solos, Great Riffs, Great Writing! Very impressive album from Paul Gilbert and company. Not only does Paul Gilbert play extremely well (of course), but the songs are great and well-written, and the rest of the band performs well too! They sound like an adrenalized Judas Priest. Excellent album for anyone who likes shred or traditional metal. Submitted by mcsavage (Pittsburgh, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Jeff Martin (vocals); Paul Gilbert, Bruce Bouillet (guitar); Scott Travis (drums). Recording information: Prairie Sun Studios, Cotati, CA (11/1986-12/1986). Racer X's debut album, Street Lethal, established the band as little more than a vehicle for guitarist Paul Gilbert's virtuosic neo-metal soloing style. For its sophomore release, Second Heat, Racer X ups the intensity of its already terrifying instrumental attack by adding second guitarist Bruce Bouillet to the fold, thereby enabling ...

| | Welcome Sirs CD (2006) Import
Street Lethal
$22.09 Personnel: Pete Brand (vocals, guitar, trumpet); Jo Claxton (vocals, violin); Mike Wurn (guitar). On their debut full-length, SIRS, Seattle's Welcome effortlessly combines two seemingly at-odds genres: the blown-mind garage of Creation and early Pink Floyd and the angular spasms of post-punk. The one-two punch is lethal as Welcome nervously explodes from section to section underneath gorgeously evocative Syd Barrett-like melodies. The touchstones are familiar, but this is one retro band that, through a unique hybrid, has stumbled across a wholly original, likable, and weird genre all its own. The Pacific Northwest seems to have produced an inordinate number of sprawling, messy, difficult-to-pinpoint indie rock bands throughout the early 2000s, and if their debut, Sirs, is any indication, Welcome can be counted among their number. They manage to conjure up the kind of spaced-out, grainy sound that nods to any number of psychedelic acts the '60s and '70s, including (and definitely not limited to) Syd Barrettand Love, while simultaneously managing to sound as scribbly, angular, and harsh as Dead Kennedys and, to an extent, the Soft Boys. They also manage to sound a little like ...
