Cacophony guitarist Marty Friedman unleashes his virtuosic six-string fury on the excellent Dragon's Kiss, which may be the most definitive sampling of Friedman's talents available. Spiking his supersaturated heavy metal sensibilities with texture, imagination, and a flair for the exotic, Friedman proves to be a distinctive modern metal soloist. This all-instrumental offering marks the end of Friedman's more indulgent, progressive solo artist phase, as he was recruited to join Megadeth's ranks shortly after its release. ~ Andy Hinds

| Dragon's Kiss Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Heavy, aggressive, and mind blowing. I'll keep it short. Fast, heavy, melodic, and ground breaking. Dragon's Kiss
$13.65 Recording information: Prairie Sun Studios, Cotati CA (08/1996).
Who's faster: Yngwie Malmsteen or Vinnie Moore? That was the question back in 1986 when this recording was released. An obvious clone of Malmsteen, Moore burst upon the scene proving that, yes, someone else could play "that fast too." The problem with Mind's Eye and the subsequent genre of shredding that followed was that it became stagnant. Malmsteen turned heads from all musical styles because of his technical proficiency back in the early '80s, but those same heads quickly turned away to find out that there was ...
| | Cacophony Speed Metal Symphony CD (1987)
Dragon's Kiss
$13.69 Cacophony's Speed Metal Symphony is one of the more extreme entries in the Shrapnel Records catalog. Rather than being a showcase for merely one guitar hero possessing superhuman technique, Cacophony brings you two guitar virtuosos, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, who are equally capable of blowing your head off with their state-of-the-art neo-classical chops. As if that weren't enough, their angular compositions are delivered at warp-speed tempos, with tons of dissonance and odd time signatures thrown into the mix. Imagine twin Yngwie Malmsteens playing simultaneously over a bed of Megadeth rhythm tracks, and you'll get the basic idea. The sheer note density on this album is tough to digest, and the brash production (standard for most Shrapnel releases) makes it all ...
| | Jason Becker Perpetual Burn CD (1988)
Dragon's Kiss
$13.45 Cacophony guitarist Jason Becker's all-instrumental solo album is a winner. On Perpetual Burn, Becker gets to stretch out and really show his talents, whereas in Cacophony, with fellow virtuoso Marty Friedman sharing the spotlight, some of the subtleties of Becker's style are lost amid the ...
| | Cacophony Go Off CD (1989)
Dragon's Kiss
$13.69 Cacophony's second (and last) effort improves on the formula established on their Speed Metal Symphony album. The brainchild of guitarists Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, Cacophony is basically an arena in which the two shredders can indulge their most decadent instrumental ideas. Their songs are as influenced by speed metal as they are by neo-classical prog rock, which makes them even more intense than many of their Shrapnel brethren. On Go Off!, the duo clean up the sound a bit and pare back the guitar excesses just a tad, allowing for a slightly more song-oriented approach (similar to what Racer X does). "Stranger" even has a ...

| | Apocalyptica Reflections CD (2003) Bonus Tracks; Enhanced CD
Dragon's Kiss
$13.19 From classical cover band devoted exclusively to performing Metallica's symphony-friendly epics to all purpose string ensemble interpreters of other heavy metal bands' music for the cello, to composers of original material fit to mingle with even more metallic translations, Finland's Apocalyptica had come a long way in the span of their first three albums. And, naturally, there were bound to be further innovations lined up for the band's fourth opus, Reflections, which arrived in 2003 bearing not a single heavy metal cover, and introducing several unexpected innovations into Apocalyptica's m.o., to boot. Chief among these was the addition of a drummer behind the group (recently paired down from quartet to trio), and since Apocalyptica's virtuosos would hardly stand for anything short of brilliance for such an assignment, that percussionist wound up being none other than Slayer legend Dave Lombardo, on whose Grip Inc. albums, group leader Eicca Toppinen had conveniently performed as well. One of those rare rock drummers whose sound and style is instantly recognizable, Lombardo was more than up to ...
