VK3 Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great progressive album I discovered Vitalij from Greg Howe's Asend release and recently bought this album and Forward and Beyond. I would recommend this release over the other. The guitar is more tasteful on this cd, and the arrangements are more mature than Forward and Beyond, thats my take. Submitted by A. Frenetic but satisfying Keyboardist for Artension and Ring Of Fire (the latter a tragically maligned and underappreciated supergroup), Kuprij continues his tradition of frenetic keyboard runs (is it all live or is some sequenced? I can't tell) and equally frenetic guitar from Ring Of Fire alum Tony MacAlpine. Enjoyable instrumental music with the keyboards mixed well. a good instumental album if you're into the schrapnel records releases, this is a must own. if you like tony macalpine, get this one. most of the schrapnel releases are guitar instrumental. this album provides a twist to that. in this case, instead of a guitar artist being the lead sound on the album, it's a keyboard artist. the keyboard and synthesizer playing is great and the guitar parts do not get lost in the songs. in other words, it's a good mix of guitar and keyboard playing. A mission from "GOD" I had an opportunity to study- this album under the guidance of a Zen Master closely tied to this album. VK3 should be a staple of any afficionado's collection. The bass line reverberates through to your soul, the keyboards elevate your mind to another level. Submitted by Keith (Concord, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Bass Work on this Disc I have heard lots of "progressive" music that feature various musicians "pet projects" and that's all well and good. However, what the majority of people fail to recognize is the rhythm section on all of these projects. As I musician myself, I tend to listen to the entire "soundscape" of any recording and rate it according to its production value, sound quality and musicianship, with the latter being the "wrap-around".
I have to state that the rhythm section on this disc actually holds all of these components together. Without them, this disc would be just another ELP meets Joe Satriani effort that would get put into the discount rack at your local shop.
The alternating nuances between the bass and drums, coupled with the guitar work actually allow Kuprij to sound better than he really is. In particular, the bass/drum work on the opening cut is very reminiscent of early Cobbham /Clarke collaborations. The stop/start staccato technique smacks of early Yes, yet is somehow transformed into a retro Keith Emerson feel via Kuprij's frenetic square wave runs.
All in all a really great disc. I just wish there were a little more acoustic piano on this work. If Kuprij is really the protege that people have labeled him to be, he should try to validate that claim by utilizing the old Beckstein a little more. Submitted by C.J. VK3 album
$14.55 During the mid- to late '80s, talent scout and Shrapnel Records owner Mike Varney was the ultimate source for new high-tech guitar virtuosos in the post-Yngwie Malmsteen era (Malmsteen was also one of his finds). Among the dozens of young guns who emerged from Varney's stable, Greg Howe was one of the best. His debut album, Greg Howe, was groove-based, and favored funk ...

$14.49 The '90s were not a good decade for shredders. In 1990, it seemed as if their place within the rock & roll pantheon was secure, but grunge and alternative quickly banished them to an underground world where most cult artists exist -- a world of independent record labels, word-of-mouth buzz and specialized magazines. Nobody escaped the purge, even though all of the guitarists were quite talented. Once they were away from the spotlight, the guitarists decided to go hardcore, not compromise their principles and make music for one very specific audience. That's why outsiders will be confounded by records like Greg Howe's Ascend, even if they're stunned by his technical ...

| | Herbie Hancock Piano CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
VK3 music CDs
$7.59 Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import.
Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting.
All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find.
Recorded after the funky fusion of Head Hunters, Thrust, Sextant, and other electric albums, and before the dawn of "Rockit" and more commercially viable and ...
