Much has been made of Whiskeytown's turbulent, short-lived life and the antics and attitude of its lead singer and songwriter Ryan Adams. But all that falls by the wayside with one listen to the alt-country youngsters' 1996 debut FAITHLESS STREET. Though its antecedents are easy enough to trace (Uncle Tupelo, anyone?), FAITHLESS STREET updates the classic country-rock sound with enough grit and sincerity to make it fresh and vital.
In part this vitality comes from Adams's punk rock background: there is enough muscle and DIY attitude here to spawn any number of front-porch alt-country wannabes. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. This is the first full release by dance music duo, Body Rockers, featuring two versions of the popular track, "I Like the Way."
For better or worse, Bodyrockers are the dance-rock equivalent of Jet: more savvy than original, they know how to use time-tested hooks and a dumbed-down mix of influences (in this case, Daft Punk and Primal Scream) to make music that gets the job done, even if it doesn't aim too high. At its best, Bodyrockers delivers an undeniable if somewhat guilty pop thrill, and as skin-thin as the music is, the duo is committed to it. On the single "I Like the Way," Dylan Burns snarls and sighs sweet nothings like "I like the way you daaaance" like he has everything invested in them. While nothing else on Bodyrockers clicks quite the way "I Like the Way" does, occasionally the album's collision of infectiously stupid hooks and clichéd lyrics reaches almost-inspired heights.
