Compilation producers: Eric Weiss, M. Christian. With the melodic punk-rock revival that has carried on more or less through the '90s, and with bands like Rancid fusing punk with ska and reggae, the musical impact of the Clash is still strongly in evidence, and a tribute album could underline that fact. Backlash: A Tribute to the Clash is not quite that tribute. Although the track listing is well chosen, the bands are mostly nondescript, often performing adequately, but lacking the spark of the original item -- especially when the bands fall into the trap of flat-out imitation. Some bands do acquit themselves well, but ultimately, punk-revival fans should do themselves a favor and listen to the original Clash albums instead. ~ Steve Huey
