| | Awaken To Demon: Tribute To Dio CD
The Dwell label's "tribute" albums are essentially just a way to package a bunch of no-name acts, who may or may not ever record an album of their own, in the hopes of generating a few record sales by invoking the material of a big-name act. Awaken the Demon: A Tribute to Dio is yet another in this vein, with a few bands turning in decent performances, but the vast majority sounding derivative, forced, or lifeless. Regardless of whether you're a fan of the tribute-album concept or not, this isn't the approach that will produce very many musically satisfying results. ~ Steve Huey

Awaken To Demon: Tribute To Dio
$13.15 Although there's much good music on this two-CD compilation -- and much music period, with each disc containing over 70 minutes of material -- it falls short of being a wholly admirable anthology of Curtis Mayfield's solo work. It's not certain whether the intention was to craft a best-of for his post-Impressions material, but if so, it misses out on too many important tracks (particularly from the ...

Awaken To Demon: Tribute To Dio
$12.59 Personnel: Adam Agius (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Andrew Meredith, Roy Torkington (guitar); Rodney Holder (drums). Photographers: Roy Torkington; Rodney Holder; Carolyn Jones; Mel Walker. Perhaps destined by its Australian origins to be one of the great unsung metal bands, the aptly named Alchemist combines its metal thrash with choice prog rock elements in a compelling and inventive mix. This double-CD best-of traces the band's development since its early-1990s formation, from the punk-prog-metal of "Worlds Within Worlds" to the sophisticated headlong rush of its nine-minute "Chinese Whispers" opus, heard here in both studio and live versions. Once ...

| | DJ Spooky Creation Rebel: Trojan Re-Mixed, Re-Visioned, Re-Versioned CD (2007) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Awaken To Demon: Tribute To Dio
$12.89 Electronica's preeminent theorist, DJ Spooky, strengthens his notion of turntablism as the postmodern revelator of truth on CREATION REBEL, a digital trip through classic reggae tracks released on the Trojan label. Subtitled RE-MIXED, RE-VISIONED, RE-VERSIONED, the album proves DJ Spooky capable of all three: this is vintage Jamaican music put through a 21st-century particle accelerator, deconstructed, then artfully reconstructed with a sense of endless invention. What's most remarkable is Spooky's allegiance to the spirit of these original tracks. He preserves their essential spirit while imbuing it with his own, making plain the connection between electronica artistry and the work of innovative Jamaican producers like King Tubby and Lee Perry. One of those rare remix albums that exceeds expectations, DJ Spooky's Creation Rebel is a "Re-Mixed, Re-Visioned, and Re-Versioned" journey through the Trojan Records vaults with the experimental maverick bringing the spirit of the legendary reggae label into the laptop age. Spooky may add modern beats, hip-hop influenced scratching, and other manipulations only possible with computers, but what makes this album so special is how Trojan the whole thing sounds, as if the label was jettisoned into the future with all their dirty six-foot bass cabinet charm intact. By opening with the same Mad Professor sample the Orb used for their chillout room classic "Blue Room," Spooky immediately connects the dots between electronica and Jamaican music, making the ...
